NOTE: This competition is limited to current salaried NAIT staff.
NAIT’s Laboratory Research and Biotechnology (Biological Sciences) Program, in the School of Applied Sciences and Technology, has an opening for a full-time Educational Laboratory Technologist. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and have a background that complements the courses delivered by the program. This position primarily supports the lab activities for the Laboratory Research and Biotechnology program.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and support courses in the Biological Sciences cohort including but not limited to molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, first-year courses, and some environmental and renewable resource courses
- Prepare and set-up of laboratory exercises for use by students and instructors
- Set up, maintain, calibrate and complete minor repairs of laboratory, field equipment and instruments used by staff and students for courses in the Biological Sciences Technology programs
- Handling of laboratory animals including basic rodent husbandry, cage changes and basic facility maintenance
- Provide support to instructors in the explanation, demonstration and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment/instruments and procedures
- Maintain labs and associated areas to meet safety and professional standards
- Prepare and maintain prep notes outlining course materials and delivery timelines for each supported course
- Work collaboratively with instructional staff to support the development of new, and modification of existing, lab procedures
- Maintain inventory of stock items and chemicals required for the smooth functioning of labs, field supplies and equipment
- Ensure materials for laboratory course delivery are ordered, present and available when required
- Safety disposal of chemical and biological wastes and other hazardous materials
- Assist with the installation of new equipment and instruments
- Write SOPs for laboratory equipment and procedures, and perform maintenance of equipment/instruments per maintenance schedules
- Safe transportation of staff and students on field courses including passenger vans, large vehicles and trailers. Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean driving record required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills required
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Laboratory and Research, or equivalent, required.
- Relevant work experience in a cell culture, molecular biology, immunology and/or microbiology lab
- Animal handling and rodent husbandry experience and/ or experience working in an educational setting an asset
- First-Aid Standard C certification an asset
- Must be physically able to lift 50 lbs.
Remuneration: $51,138.62 - $69,092.14 bi-weekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Educational Laboratory Technologist II)
This position is covered by the AUPE (Alberta Union of Provincial Employees) Collective Agreement.
