This Data Specialist role is based at the Faculty’s Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM).

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Associate Director of DFCM’s Research Program while receiving functional direction from the program’s Database Architect, the Data Specialist will support various research projects within UPLEARN, the university’s practice-based research and learning network of electronic medical record (EMR) data, and POPLAR, the provincial network of primary care EMR networks. This role will have a particular focus on a new and innovative initiative called theCare Canvas Dashboard. The incumbent will support the update of this quality improvement (QI) dashboard, which is used by primary care physicians and administrators, including the creation of new data features and front-end integrations. The person in this role will have end-to-end ownership of the project. The Data Specialist will manipulate incoming data, create metrics, ensure that those changes are reflected properly in the front-end design of the dashboard, and ensure that the dashboard is accessed in a secure manner by end users. The UofT-based UPLEARN and provincial POPLAR networks share a mission to revolutionize primary care by bridging gaps between research and practice. As the Data Specialist, you will be at the heart of our innovative projects, collaborating with top researchers, clinicians, and practices across all of our DFCM academic sites. Together, we work towards improving primary care health and service outcomes for all in Ontario.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables, and reporting
  • Analyzing complex data that requires great precision and attention to many details
  • Analyzing and writing program scripts to extract data from a Postgres database, reformat, analyze, then present data in a meaningful way for the target audience
  • Designing, optimizing and processing data sets
  • Running queries to gather data and maintaining data archives
  • Probing for information to determine requirements for ad hoc data requests
  • Training end-users on procedures and the use of system

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years of relevant and related experience
  • Strong collaboration skills (working within Physicians, other analysts, and stakeholders within the health care system)
  • Minimum two years’ experience with and manipulating data in Python
  • Minimum two years’ NoSQL (MongoDB) data storage
  • Basic knowledge of SQL (PostGres)
  • Applied knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, CSS
  • Experience with AWS tools (Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, VPC)
  • Experience and understanding of current best practices regarding data security and authentication mechanisms (e.g., OAuth 2.0 and OTPs)
  • Data modelling and data analysis skills.
  • Decision making regarding work priorities and deadlines must be appropriate in order to maintain an orderly schedule and completion of deadlines materials
  • Independent judgment and analytical skills required to perform statistical analyses
  • Applied knowledge of machine learning techniques such as regression, classification, natural language processing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and simultaneously working with on several projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive working relationship with research scholars and colleagues.
  • Self-motivated, team player with strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of faculty, staff, researchers, clinicians, healthcare professionals and other collaborators.
  • Tact, initiative, good judgment and patience.
  • Ability to handle matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience working with a variety of data sources, experience with EMR data and/or administrative data is an asset
  • Experience with Python’s SciKit Learn is an asset.

USW Pay Band 13 -- $83,150 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $106,336. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
