Employment opportunity available at Macdonald Campus (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue), Department of Natural Resource Sciences, to provide technical support for teaching laboratories in Microbiology.


Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a large teaching laboratory or several teaching labs. Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Liaises between staff and students. Performs duties related to administering laboratory sections and examinations. Coordinates production of course documents. Administers accounts. Maintains equipment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
(i) Oversees the day-today operations of a large teaching laboratory or several teaching laboratories. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Confers with professors concerning the scope and objectives of teaching laboratory sessions.

(iii) Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Reviews existing experiments. Performs literature searches; reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Tests, evaluates and participates in devising new methodology and experiments.

(iv) Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Designs or fabricates specialized equipment as required. Oversees set-up of equipment and demonstrations.

(v) Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks within field of expertise. (vi) Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

(ix) Prepares and updates laboratory manuals and handbooks; coordinates the production and distribution of these documents.

(x) Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

(xi) Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing. (xii) Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material. Ensures timed purchase of perishables and live specimens.

(xiii) Maintains records and files.

(xiv) Performs accounting functions such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers and resolving discrepancies. Forecasts costs of supplies, materials and equipment. Prepares budgets or budget proposals.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Demonstrated experience related to microbiology research and course support.  Ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot a wide variety of mechanical, electronic and analytical equipment.  Must have training in first aid, hazardous materials management, biosafety and biosafety cabinets, and web site management, or be willing to take training. 

Education: Undergraduate degree, Master's degree preferred.

Demonstrated ability in data management and with computer programs, including Outlook, Internet, MS software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), virtual platforms such as Zoom and MS Teams, Minerva and MMP. Ability to order materials and supplies, track course and maintenance expenses, and maintain financial records in compliance with McGill guidelines. Proven organizational skills. Ability to multitask and maintain equipment and facilities in a clean and orderly fashion when used for multiple concurrent activities. Attention to detail in all aspects of the job. Demonstrated ability to work independently, to train students and interact well with students at all levels. French, spoken. 

Knowledge of English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #3 (advanced) on a scale of 0-4.
