Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager, Counselling Services, the incumbent will work with racialized students within our community. The incumbent will assess client’s psychological and emotional development; plan and implement therapeutic interventions; and participate in the ongoing evaluation of counselling service delivery. The incumbent is responsible to provide quality health care to the Carleton University community in accordance with the policies, goals and objectives of Health & Counselling Services.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Experience and knowledge of the impacts of racial trauma (including anti-black racism) on individuals and communities.
• Relevant lived experience of racialization.
• Understanding of systemic barriers faced by those from marginalized and underrepresented communities and its impacts.
• Passionate about contributing to positive social change and commitment to anti-oppression and antiracism.
• Demonstrated commitment to critical self-reflection, personal, and cultural awareness.
• Ability to speak a different language is an asset.
• Excellent time management skills, crucial for staying on time with appointments.
• Flexibility and ability to respond to unscheduled urgent situations.
• Recognition of limitations, knowing when to consult and seeking supervision when appropriate.
• Understanding of the developmental stage of the age group being served and the unique stresses experienced by students in post-secondary education.
• Knowledge of key principles of program development, group facilitation, and learning, including prior experience in this area.
• Sound comprehension of pedagogical principles and how to integrate them into program development and delivery.
• Understanding of key mental health issues and trends impacting students living in residence.
• Desire to address issues proactively through the development and implementation of educational programs and training.


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Completion of a Master’s degree in a counseling field and/or social work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Current valid registration as a registered Psychotherapist, or equivalent.
• Five years working as a counselor and/or psychotherapist serving racialized communities.
• Preferably, at least 2 years of experience in a college, university, or other educational setting.

Health and Safety Requirements

This position is regularly required to work on campus in person. In the event of a public health emergency or a health and safety issue, it is possible that you may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health orders, directives and/or health and safety requirements. If this happens, you will work with your direct manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. You are required to follow all University policies and directives, including to set up a safe and confidential workspace in a remote location and ensure all Carleton property (intellectual and other) is safeguarded. If required to work remotely, you will be notified by your manager when working full time physically onsite will resume.
