Position Details
The University is inviting applications for a Communications Specialist, (Program Specialist II). This is an AUPE full time, Temporary position (May 2024 to May 2025) to support the Faculty of Education portfolio. We are seeking an individual who is an experienced communications professional, a skilled writer, and a social media expert, with exceptional technical skills.
Reporting to the Director of Communications in the Department of Communications, Marketing and Government Relations, this position is housed in the Faculty of Education and works closely with the Dean and the Dean’s office. The Communications Specialist plays an integral role in developing and coordinating communications strategies and materials that are aligned with the institutional strategic communication plan, and advance the brand and public image of both the University and the Faculty of Education.
An excellent communicator, this position develops engaging content that highlights Faculty of Education students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters, as well as the Faculty’s programming, research/creative activities excellence, and community engagement to a broad range of audiences: prospective students, students, faculty/staff, alumni, donors and community.
This Includes:
  • Feature writing, editorial writing, marketing copy, news releases, newsletters, internal communications, graphics, photography, videography, print materials for internal and external distribution, digital marketing materials and branded materials.
  • Perform general website updates, maintenance and content development of portfolio website content.
  • Provide communication planning, content creation, coordination and support for Faculty/Department events.

The Communications Specialist is a master of tone and voice and adapts content for audience and distribution via specific mediums and social media channels.
Working in a team environment, the Communications Specialist plays a key role in managing the University’s social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn) from a content perspective, working with stakeholders and content contributors and scheduling posts. This position also manages the Faculty of Education’s Instagram and Twitter accounts.
This position collaborates with members of the Department of Communications, Marketing and Government Relations, the Faculty of Education, as well as teams from across the University to ensure clarity, consistency and quality, and to enhance the University’s profile and presence in an increasingly competitive educational environment.
Some evening / weekend work and travel may be required.

The University of Lethbridge is undertaking a job classification review for Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) positions. As such, the classification level currently assigned for this position may be adjusted as a result of this project.
Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, with preference given to communications, journalism or public relations, or a related field, with two years of industry experience.
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills, including editorial/feature writing and writing for the web, as well as Canadian Press writing standards.
  • Social media expertise, including strategy, content development, execution, monitoring and measurement.
  • Media relations and event support experience.
  • Strong project management and time management skills.
  • Photography and videography skills are an asset.
  • High level of computer literacy, including MS Office, SharePoint, Teams, Zoom, Meltwater, Campaign Monitor (or other e-newsletter programs), Canva and updating web content in a Drupal environment.
  • Creative thinker, ability to use data to measure effectiveness.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven creative environment with competing priorities.
  • You must be a collaborator and team player.
  • Knowledge of design concepts, effective desktop, print, and online design/publication skills.
  • Proficiency in using digital photo equipment, photo editing (InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Spark).
  • Knowledge of undergraduate and graduate programming and research at the University of Lethbridge an asset.
Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $5,291.00 - $5,990.00 monthly
Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $5,291.00 - $6,687.00 monthly (AUPE - Grade 12)
