Organizational Status
UBC Botanical Garden is an operational unit within the Faculty of Science. The Mission of the Garden is to assemble, curate, and maintain a documented living collection of temperate plants for the purposes of education, research, conservation, community outreach, and public display. Our Vision is that plants are understood, valued, celebrated, and secure in a healthy, biodiverse world.

Reports to the Marketing & Communications Manager, or delegate. This position is .6FTE


Work Performed:

  • Assists in the creation informative content, blog posts, e-blasts, newsletters, press releases, articles, and media opportunities to share the Garden’s brand.
  • Assists in the creation and maintenance a weekly social media calendar
  • Assists in posting to social media, responding to and monitoring follower engagement and correspondence across the Garden’s social media accounts.
  • Assists in the maintenance of all social media accounts, create original content to promote education and events, and services, while maintaining consistent messaging across platforms to keep audiences engaged.
  • Working under the supervision of the Marketing & Communications Manager and works with all areas of the Garden to produce and publish engaging, informative, scientifically accurate, and on-brand marketing content that builds program and brand awareness along with excellent customer satisfaction
  • Assists with the maintenance of brand standards by keeping messaging, look, and feel of all marketing materials aligned with existing branding guidelines
  • Works within a team setting to brainstorm new ideas and marketing strategies
  • Working with the Marketing & Communications Manager, supports the internal and external communications to keep Garden staff and university staff, the public, volunteers, and the media informed about developments within the Garden
  • Assists with the preparation of detailed media activity reports using the established brand and look of the Garden
  • Assists in the planning of the design, content, and production of all marketing materials
  • Captures the Garden video and photo assets, this includes media related to the plant collections, visitors, volunteers, events, outreach, programs, and the Shop in the Garden
  • Creates and customizes marketing templates in accordance with the current Garden brand and standards
  • Researches and identifies advertising and cross‐promotional opportunities with various media agencies and other stakeholder groups
  • Assists with routine updates to the content on the Garden’s website
  • Provide operational support at events, both on and off-site
  • Assists in the preparation of written material to support fund‐raising efforts
  • Helps in the promotion of EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) across all communications in alignment with University policy
  • Assists in the creation, maintenance, and implementation of surveys designed to solicit customer satisfaction feedback, and report on aggregate results
  • Respond to communication-related issues in a timely manner
  • Works to minimize damage from any type of immediate problem by using principles of crisis management
  • Under the supervision of the Marketing & Communications Manager, creates, maintains, and implements surveys designed to solicit customer satisfaction, feedback, and report on aggregate results
  • Other duties as assigned

The work and decisions of the Communications & Marketing Assistant have a direct and critical impact on the reputation and effective operation of UBC Botanical Garden. Poor decisions or judgment will result in damage to the Department and the University's reputation with students, staff, faculty and the broader community. Incorrect decisions will affect the University's ability to effectively communicate with its audience, with a direct negative impact on the student experience and the department's business objectives


Supervision Received

Works independently under minimal supervision. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted practices. Reports to the Marketing & Communications Manager.


Supervision Given
May supervise Work Learn students and supervises the marketing and/or communications work of other staff within the Garden, including 2 FTE staff.
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation, plus two years of post-secondary education, plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proven ability to write for social media.

  • Proven ability take high-quality photographs.

  • Knowledge of and ability to develop and implement video and photo communications and marketing campaigns for social media and other digital communications and marketing channels.

  • Ability to effectively use office software at an intermediate level (minimum requirement: Microsoft 2010 Outlook, Word, Excel).

  • Ability to effectively use content management and email marketing software at an intermediate level.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use social media platforms at an intermediate level (minimum requirement: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube)

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities; prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines; and be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail.

  • Ability to anticipate problems and issues, plan ahead, and exercise sound judgment.

  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.

  • High level of enthusiasm, diplomacy, and professionalism.
