Your opportunity:
The Atkinson Centre for Society and Child Development is a policy research centre that is committed to using the best available evidence on early childhood to inform public policy discourse, practice and the development of the early learning workforce. Through knowledge mobilization and translation, we work for change in improving the quality of early childhood programs and the working conditions of the early childhood workforce.

The Communications Coordinator will develop and implement organizing strategies across Canada including creating engaging content that will expand support for the early childhood workforce. The goal of the campaign is to establish national work standards that improve the working conditions of the ECE workforce known broadly as the Bill of Rights for the ECE workforce.

The responsibilities will include: researching legislated work standards in other community-based sectors; working collaboratively with the National Project team and the Atkinson Centre Executive Director, developing plans and implementing platforms to share reports and knowledge mobilization; developing content for marketing and promotion of the Bill of Rights; designing and driving a social media strategy for a variety of audiences; and pitching stories of strategic value to various media outlets.

The work week may involve evenings and weekends depending on when discussion groups and data collection can be carried out. As well, travel will be required within Canada a few times a year to provide opportunities to engage with the ECE workforce.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing digital communication plans across a broad range of marketing/communication channels
  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
  • Pitching stories of strategic value to others media and other public education outlets
  • Maintaining information on digital platforms
  • Producing promotional and outreach materials
  • Analyzing the effectiveness of campaigns and/or programs using metrics

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing or related field, or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum four years' recent relevant experience in marketing or communications.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, planning and implementing a platform for communications and knowledge sharing.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing to suit multiple styles, tones and audiences.
  • Experience designing a social media strategy for a variety of audiences.
  • Professional experience overseeing a variety of media and social media platforms (e.g. YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).
  • Experience pitching stories of strategic value to various media outlets.
  • Experience in preparing and designing communication content, promotional material, website content and website maintenance.
  • Experience working with early childhood educators, teachers, and researchers.
  • Experience and understanding of best practices in accessible, user-centred design and content creation. Familiarity with current provincial accessibility guidelines; commitment to accessibility.
  • Understanding of the guiding principles of good user experience. Experience working with different CMS tools. Experience with Google Analytics.
  • Superior communication skills (oral and written); demonstrated writing skills for various formats with outstanding copyediting and proofreading skills.
  • Superior skills with web and graphic design software, InDesign, Illustrator, Image editing tools, e-newsletter tools and PowerPoint.
  • Conceptual and working knowledge of content management systems is required.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to follow online communications trends and technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational skills and the ability to work independently. Excellent public-service orientation and evidence of effective teamwork.
  • Must be creative, resourceful and solutions-oriented; ability to manage priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Strong relationship management skills. Awareness of, and sensitivity to, diversity issues.

Notes: This is an 80% FTE appointment for 18-months with the possibility of renewal.

Pro-rated Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone: USW Pay Band 11 at 80% FTE -- $58,998 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $75,448. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
