NAIT's Electrical Engineering Technology program is a nationally accredited and internationally recognized program that provides a comprehensive study of electrical principles and practices. The program will provide graduates with the skills to perform entry-level roles in several industry disciplines, including power systems operation and protection, maintenance and commissioning, electrical machines, industrial and commercial design, power electronics, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

The Electrical Engineering Technology program has an opening for a casual instructor who is an energetic leader, committed to student success, with outstanding communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

Topics include familiarization with switchgear and protection and control diagrams, including single-line and breaker control schematics. Testing using industry standards is performed on medium-voltage cables, circuit breakers and on power and instrument transformers. Students are required to produce and present a technical report detailing the procedures and results obtained during the course.

ELEC1181 – Electrical Fundamentals – (Lab co-instructor ) – This course begins with the basic fundamentals of DC voltage, current and resistance. It will also look at Ohm’s law and Kirchhoff’s laws and their applications for series and parallel circuits, resistance networks and circuit reduction theorems. Other topics include energy and power, capacitance, and the use of measuring instruments. The course then covers magnetism, magnetic circuits, electromagnetism and single phase AC. It will also discuss the fundamentals of inductance, reactance, impedance and admittance. Resonance in series and parallel AC circuits will be discussed as well as impedance networks, energy, power, power factor and power factor improvement. Phasor diagrams and power quality instruments will be used throughout the course to corroborate experimental data with theoretical calculations. Laboratory exercises reinforce the theory.

The successful candidate will:

  • have strong technical knowledge in Electrical Engineering fundamentals
  • have technical knowledge and experience in field service and protective relaying
  • be able to work both independently and within a team environment
