Position Summary:

The Business Development (BD) Officer will create and maintain strategic relationships, partnerships and alliances with target industries and companies to build internships and full-time opportunities. The candidate will develop a strong understanding of our BCom and Master’s programs to best promote a world-class international talent pipeline to existing and new corporate partners.  

The BD Officer will spearhead corporate relations planning and initiatives, including planning of outreach communications, campaigns, follow-ups, events promotion and engagement. In collaboration with the Director, Desautels Career Management Services, and the Events & Communications Officer, the incumbent will oversee the strategic alignment and timely execution of all BD-led recruitment and networking activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage existing relationships and develop diversified new business contacts with targeted industries; companies; high growth employment sectors and markets; local business associations (Chambre de commerce du Montréal métropolitain, Toronto Board of Trade, Calgary Board of Trade, TechTO etc); international business community associations (Montreal International etc.) as aligned with our Desautels students’ interests and Faculty’s priorities .
  • Spearhead business development planning and initiate corporate relationships to increase recruiting at the Desautels Faculty of Management.
  • Analyze corporate lead generation and brand awareness results to develop growth strategies accordingly.
  • With the support of the Desautels Marketing & Communications team, provide data-driven recommendations to enhance our outreach, market presence and conversion with targeted employers.
  • Promote the Desautels programs and talent pool to targeted employers (current and prospective) and increase the branding and visibility of Desautels in high growth employment markets.
  • Monitor employment trends, and provide relevant market insights to students and career coaches. Define actionable recommendations to incorporate these insights into our corporate outreach planning and programs.
  • Identify and create opportunities to connect students/employers/Alumni.
  • Partner with relevant sector-specific undergraduate and graduate student clubs to align corporate and alumni outreach for events/networking opportunities.
  • Work closely with Career Coaches to determine the needs of students and leverage optimal tools to share relevant and curated employment information or resources.
  • Scout job markets for relevant internships and full-time opportunities and provide curated updates to promote to our students (newsletters/Career Portals etc.).
  • Validate key employment information directly with corporate contacts such as selection process, OCR timelines, targeted audience, salary, level, language and technical requirements, business model, priority mandates, preferred application process etc.
  • Maintain competitive intelligence and provide information to respective programs about professional and technical skills needed in the market.
  • Maintain and update our employer and alumni (0-3 years post-graduation) lists.
  • Track KPIs and record employer recruitment and engagement activity through our CRM tool (Orbis MyFuture).
  • Ensure relevant employer information is kept in our CRM tool (Orbis MyFuture).
  • When appropriate, along with Director, facilitate employer introduction meetings to deepen employer partnerships.
  • In collaboration with the Events & Communications Officer, reach out and confirm relevant employers participation to Career Services marquee recruiting events (ex. JF Montreal Career Fair, Meet McGill Toronto trips, Real Talk etc.), ensuring high engagement and follow-up.
  • Ensure all communication to employers are compliant with provincial language requirements.
  • Collaborate with Rankings Project Manager for Masters Programs to collect and validate required information for ranking purposes (employment data/Alumni data). 
  • Collaborate with Advancement Team to develop new relationships with employers.
  • In coordination with the DAR and the administration teams, drive some undergraduate and masters alumni relations initiatives, in so far as they help with corporate recruiting: manage relationships with McGill alumni 0-3 years post- graduation to maintain high level of satisfaction with their McGill experience; connect with McGill alumni in key industry roles, invite them to engage with McGill for recruiting, and various other initiatives such as mentoring, coffee chats, alumni events, etc.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, marketing, Human Resources, business or equivalent
  • 5-7 years+ of industry experience in business development/sales, marketing planning/digital communications/brand management, or project management with knowledge of relevant job market realities, and preferably having existing network relationships.
  • Experience in working in career management services and higher education an asset.
  • Must be results-driven, a self-starter, and highly motivated.
  • Proven capacity to identify, develop and maintain corporate relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively; takes initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and bilingualism (French-English) are required.
  • Experience in conducting presentations to senior management (internally and externally).
  • Strong analytical skills; agile and adaptable, responsive to changes and feedback from markets and team.
  • Ability to evaluate results (reports), develop and execute corporate outreach planning accordingly.
  • Proficient using MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams), CRM tools (Salesforce, Orbis), advanced knowledge of job boards, ATS or recruiting tools including LinkedIn Sales navigator.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Occasional overtime required and work evenings for events.
