Position summary

Reporting to the Director of Counselling & Clinical Services (CCS), the Associate Director & Chief Psychologist is accountable for supporting the overall management of CCS operations, programs and personnel.  Major areas of responsibility include: management of psychology clinical staff, assisting with strategic planning and decision making for the unit, supporting the overall functioning of the clinic and its programming and staff, supporting all staff Registered Psychologists with clinical and professional tasks, and special projects and assignments as required. Additionally, the Associate Director & Chief Psychologist engages in clinical work and direct service delivery consistent with the APO Doctoral Registered Psychologist position description.

Duties

Primary management of staff Registered Psychologists:

  • Supervises a team of 6-9 Registered Psychologists. 
  • In conjunction with the Director, manages all associated HR duties for team of assigned psychologists, including sick/vacation/professional development day management, leave management, performance reviews, handling of complaints, and performance management up to the point of formal discipline. 
  • Supervise the Director of Training (direct report, included in 6-9 psychologists) in training program management (i.e., assisting in the adherence of the Doctoral Counselling Psychology Residency Program to the standards of the Canadian Psychological Association and the maintenance of the master’s practicum program). Support as needed.
  • Maintain expertise in guidelines, standards, and bulletins put forth by the College of Alberta Psychologists and the Canadian Psychological Association.

Support the strategic planning and decision making for the CCS unit:

  • With the Director, co-create strategic plans for CCS, including establishing priorities and interpreting and incorporating the strategies priorities of the broader institution and the Office of the Dean of Students into the goals of the unit. 
  • In collaboration with the Director, evaluate programming annually to determine if the needs of the population served and the unit staff are being met sufficiently, efficiently, and successfully. 
  • Collaborate with the Director to plan and implement program changes required to better serve the needs of the populations served and the unit staff, when shortcomings are identified.  
  • With the Director, establish and communicate goals, values, and priorities for the CCS team year over year. 

New Staff training and Orientation; ongoing team member development:

  • In conjunction with the Director, co-manage, organize, and provide the training and orientation of all new team members.
  • With the Director of Training and CCS Director, co-manage and provide the training and orientation for students in the CCS training program.
  • Manage and organize other staff involvement in the training and orientation of new team members.
  • Ensure team members are up-to-date with various yearly DoS training requirements, including but not limited to FOIP, privacy training, and twice yearly DoS Portfolio PD events.

Support the overall functioning, program administration, and growth of the CCS clinic and its staff:

    • Write, review, manage and maintain the annual clinic plan for psychoeducational workshops, psychotherapy groups, supervision rotations, in-services, seminars, and staff scheduling.
  • Develop, maintain and amend CCS policies and work-flows as required and review the CCS Policies & Procedure Manual on an annual basis.
  • Collect and analyze ongoing unit statistics
  • Liaise with U of A communication associates to ensure that unit website is up to date, design materials are relevant and within the broader brand of the University, and programming is being advertised, promoted and reflected in broader University communication platforms.
  • Support the Director in the development and maintenance of the annual CCS budget

Clinical service delivery:

  • Ongoing individual, group, or single session counselling.
  • Psychoeducational workshop delivery.
  • Outreach programming (education, collaboration and consultation as requested by the campus community).
  • Clinical supervision of practicum students and doctoral residents.
  • Clinical hours as described above may vary throughout the year.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Ph.D. in counselling or clinical psychology from a CPA accredited program. 
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists.
  • Interpersonal and management skills necessary for successful supervision, including strong communication and conflict management abilities. 
  • Excellent written and oral skills with a focus on client service.
  • Understanding of statistical data collection and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of relevant provincial legislation and governing policies.
  • Expertise in the College of Alberta Psychologists Standards of Practice and Canadian Psychological Association Code of Ethics.  
  • Superior organization, problem-solving, project management, and critical thinking skills. Collaborative skills essential.
  • Excellent emotional regulation skills required.
  • Must value and project the strategic visions of the University of Alberta and CCS: EDI, Indigenous Strategic Plan, accessibility, and maintaining a balance of staff and client focus.
  • Ability to provide information and professional advice to all levels of HWS team members (e.g. physicians, mental health consultants, social workers, psychologists, administration, etc.).
  • Excellent information system skills including the CCS Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and relevant administrative systems.
