Associate Director, Career Coaching

The Associate Director, Career Coaching will report directly to the Director of the Soutar Career Centre, and work closely with the Directors of Master’s programs (MBA, MMA, MMF, MMR) to help design and implement relevant career development training programs.

Primary responsibilities include the hiring and managing of the Masters and BCom Career Coaches; overseeing the suite of workshops and programs designed to prepare all Desautels students for the next stage of their career progression; tracking of internships and post-graduation placement for international ranking purposes of Masters programs; managing and monitoring the costs of Desautels Masters career planning; coaching a group of MBA students to support their career planning and skills development; reviewing, and establishing best practices across the Masters (MBA/MMF/MMA/MMR) and BCom programs in a consistent manner.

As a representative of the Desautels Faculty, the incumbent provides proper direction in contributing to the positioning and vision of the faculty and of McGill University.

Specific tasks and responsibilities include:

Managing and providing effective leadership for the team of Career coaches:

  • Collaborate with Director to hire, develop, and assess the performance of professional personnel under their direct supervision, and ensure that performance and compensation reviews are conducted properly.
  • Work closely with Career Coaches/Advisors (BCom and Master’s) to help design and implement career development training programs.
  • Maintain a safe and productive environment for staff and students, incorporating principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, intersectionality and well-being into programs and services.

Representing Soutar Career Management Centre and the Desautels Faculty in diverse engagement activities:

  • Participate and support various university committees and public events with internal and external stakeholders, and assume tasks related to this involvement including conducting presentations to prospective or current students, alumni groups, faculty and corporate partners in order to secure suitable employment opportunities for Desautels students.
  • Liaise and maintain positive relationships with other units within the Faculty (ie: Marketing/Communication, EDI, UA, MEI, student affairs, Experiential Learning, etc.), other Faculties (ie: Engineering) and external stakeholders.
  • Represent Career Management at internal and/or external meetings, replacing the Director as a figurehead/spokesperson when necessary.
  • Contribute, when requested, to produce Career Management-related material for the Faculty’s marketing and fundraising objectives (Marketing/Comm and University Advancement), as well as annual reporting and ad hoc internal and/or external requests for information.

Financial planning and monitoring of the Career Management budget for activities related to Master’s programs.  

  • Maintain a global overview of the MASTERS related Career Management programming by collaborating with MBA/MMF/MMR/MMA Programs and Academic Directors to integrate and schedule offerings that meet market demands and ensure the highest degree of client satisfaction amongst students.
  • In consultation with Career coaches and Associate Director of Operations, explore new vendors, external providers, and topics (e.g., searching & testing vendors, facilitators, platforms, tools, to offer different and relevant workshops to address students’ needs); compare service offerings, manage relationships with external vendors, negotiate and make recommendations based on budget, availabilities, service offerings and student groups’ needs.

Providing career advising expertise to MBA students and recent alumni.

  • Provide individualized consultation and coaching to MBA students to support their career planning and skills development: including administration of career assessment tools, preparations for on-campus recruiting and self-directed job search.

  • Represent Career Management in MBA Program admissions by providing input on admissions processes, interviewing prospective candidates, and participating in admissions decisions.

Collaborating with the Director and Associate Director of Operations in defining and implementing the unit’s strategic plans to enhance career management in alignment with the Faculty’s vision:

  • Identify priorities and objectives for Career Management and communicate successes and challenges with relevant members of the Faculty.
  • Develop and monitor policies, programs and plans to meet these objectives. Stay up-to-date with industry trends and job market changes.

Overseeing implementation of efficient and coherent evaluation tools and measures, as well as a coherent communications plan:

  • Define and establish tangible targets and implement systems that allow for periodic assessment of Career Management; monitor student engagement and their overall preparation with Career Management.
  • Analyze, monitor and report results from Desautels students employment placements (internships and post-graduation placement) across all programs for international ranking purposes.
  • Work closely with Corporate relations team to ensure business development efforts in targeting organizations are aligned with students’ interests and programs’ requirements to significantly increase student placements.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of 8 years of combined experience working within the Career services of a leading university or business school, and/or in the Recruiting team within a corporate environment.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience leading a team.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as business administration, management, organizational behavior, human resources.
  • Demonstrated experience in career coaching, job placement, or related field.
  • Proven experience in budget planning and management.
  • Solid ability to build trust within the team and foster an inclusive culture and flexible work style that can suit people with different skills, experiences and perspectives.
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence and relationship building skills; ability to engage with and adapt to an international and diverse clientele
  • Strong client orientation and empathy. A desire to help others achieve their objectives.
  • Capacity to work with several projects simultaneously, ability to react quickly and effectively.
  • Strong leadership, conflict resolution and relationship management skills. Agile and adaptable.
  • Excellent understanding of the employment market landscape and trends.
  • Strong communication abilities and must be fluent in English and French (verbal and written).
  • Good knowledge of MS Office and comfortable with technology.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, particularly between August and November


Minimum Education and Experience:

Annual Salary:


(MPEX Grade 07) $88,830.00 - $111,040.00 - $133,250.00
