The Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, is accepting applications for the position of an Academic Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgeon.

The Neurosurgery Program at the University of Alberta is committed to the improvement of health through excellence in patient care, leadership in education and research, and in preventative initiatives directed at the promotion of neurological well-being. The Division of Neurosurgery in Edmonton provides comprehensive neurosurgical services for a wide geographic area serving a population of over two million. Every subspecialty within Neurosurgery is represented in the Division. The Division is supported in its work by state of the art neurosurgical technologies including a 3T intraoperative MRI operation theatre, and a Gamma Knife unit.

The Division is recruiting an academic Stereotactic and Functional neurosurgeon at the Assistant Professor rank to commence July 2023. The position will be split between a 50% commitment to clinical practice, and a 50% commitment to academic activities.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate’s clinical practice will focus on Stereotactic and Functional neurosurgery, covering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for movement disorders and other indications, as well as surgery for epilepsy, chronic pain, spasticity, and stereotactic radiosurgery for functional indications. Clinical practice will include participation in a general neurosurgery on call program and will incorporate non-classroom teaching of neurosurgery residents and medical students. The 50% academic commitment will primarily be devoted to research (at least 30%), with considerable freedom given to the successful candidate’s vision in developing a functional neurosurgery research program (basic or clinical science). Classroom-based teaching and administrative duties will make up the remainder of the academic commitment.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent, have completed residency training in Neurosurgery, and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The successful candidate must hold the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Neurosurgery. Strong preference will be given to applicants who have completed a recognized fellowship in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. Preference will also be given to applicants holding a Masters’ Degree or PhD, and/or who have clear evidence of research productivity especially in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery.
