Job Summary
Dalhousie University is a member of the U-15, Canada’s group of top 15 research-intensive universities. Under the leadership of the Vice-President Research & Innovation, Dalhousie administers over $200M annually in research funding. Reporting to the Director, Strategic Initiatives and Programs, the Assistant Director, Research Programs retains responsibility for coordination of pre-award supports across Faculties, supports refining pre-award processes, as well as more broadly supporting institutional compliance with national and international funder policies. The Assistant Director provides oversight, leadership, support and direction to the Faculty-based Research Facilitators.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee ongoing University compliance with national and international funding agency policies as they arise and/or evolve. Lead the coordination of information sharing, process development and implementation when new policies and processes are introduced by funding agencies.
  • Liaise with national and international funders to collect available information to assess new and evolving requirements, where possible map with existing capacities and processes within ORS.
  • Liaise with researchers, research teams, University departments, senior administration, and external partners to oversee operations of application preparation teams.
  • Work with a variety of university experts to assemble data and evidence of research strength in relation to funding applications; explore and ascertain alignments with institutional strategic plans, particularly those of the Research and Innovation enterprise.
  • Provide information and advice to Associate Deans Research, and Department Heads to ensure that applications are completed to their best advantage, are strategically placed to take advantage of the programs, and meet all the policies of the University and the agencies.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of Faculty research funding strategies and provide guidance on international and interdisciplinary research funding programs and opportunities. Identify research synergies and creates opportunities for new avenues of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with seven to ten years’ related experience working in management and/or leadership role (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience managing personnel and leading multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience dealing with the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of complex information.
  • Excellent judgment, strong organizational skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work at both an operational and strategic level is vital to this role.
  • Excellent communication skills are required – the incumbent must be able to present information in outreach sessions effectively, advise on and edit research applications and communicate appropriately in person and by e-mail.
Assets
  • Experience in project management.
  • Knowledge of the research funding environment including funding programs, research funding agencies and practices, and functions related to research and research administration.
