YOUR OPPORTUNITY:

Working under the general direction of the Director, Facilities Management & Capital Projects, the Assistant Director, Engineering & Physical Plant oversees the physical plant and operational engineering of the entire UTSC Campus. The overall site responsibility includes all TSSA regulated equipment used on the UTSC Campus by staff, faculty, students and operations and has a Central Utilities Plant which only recently has transitioned from a TSSA class 1 certified steam plant for Carbon Reduction. The Assistant Director is accountable and liable directly to the TSSA regulatory body in accordance to the Technical Standards Safety Act, Boiler and Pressure Vessels Ontario, Regulation 220/01 and Operating Engineers Ontario, Regulation 219/01. This position is also responsible for managing an annual financial budget of approximately $5 million covering both utilities and physical plant maintenance.

The Assistant Director, Engineering & Physical Plant provides a wide range of professional services that include all aspects of utility and building operations engineering and as defined by the TSSA.

Key services include providing technical guidance recommending corrective action and commissioning of new installations based on inspection of thermal systems; provide technical expertise to Project Management, Design & Engineering, Trades staff, building occupants and external contractors on complex building operations issues.

The Assistant Director is also accountable to the TSSA for overseeing all Building Operating Engineers on the UTSC campus with respect to ensuring they receive ongoing training to properly operate building systems, safe daily operations of building systems (e.g. pressure vessels, chillers, high- and low-pressure boilers,) and ensures they are all TSSA compliant.

Develops and manages a number of departmental project initiatives, including large deferred maintenance infrastructure projects and the operating and project budgets for site automation. These budgets directly impact daily operations and project cash flows committed by the department.

Provides technical consultation, building operations management direction, building automation site standards, including design, installation and commissioning. Responsible and accountable for both operational and life safety site automation systems.

Interacts daily with the first level operations staff which includes Plumbers, Electricians, Millwrights and Operating Engineers, as well as customers, other departmental senior management, faculty, service providers and vendors.

The Assistant Director will act as the Director in their absence to manage and oversee the department and its operations.
