This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

The department is hiring 2 positions. These two positions are flexible in terms of working hours and term length, including a potential end date or career status. These factors will be discussed with candidates at the time of hire. 

Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement .

Location - This role is in person at Calgary.

Working for the Department of Occupational Therapy

The Department of Occupational Therapy in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta is seeking applicants for part-time to full-time Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor positions for the Calgary satellite campus of the MScOT program.

Position 

At the Edmonton campus and the Calgary satellite sites, the University of Alberta MScOT program offers students a wide variety of academic and clinical experiences supported by an extensive network of dedicated academic and clinical educators and preceptors. The program is expanding to a new satellite site at the UofA Augustana Campus in Camrose commencing in the fall of 2024. Implementation of an occupation-centred, inquiry-driven curriculum, Education for Capability; is also underway for the fall of 2024. The Department has as a core priority the ongoing nurture and development of relationships with Indigenous communities and with organizations that support vulnerable, equity-deserving individuals and those with unmet mental, physical, and occupational needs.

Duties 

Based in Calgary Alberta, these positions comprise teaching and teaching-related responsibilities, as well as a teaching-related service component, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Primary or Co-Instructor and/or Coordinator for assigned MScOT courses;
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across the Edmonton, Calgary and Augustana program sites, as well as with the Communication Sciences & Disorders and Physical Therapy Masters programs, to ensure equitable quality learning experiences for all students;
  • Support and/or coordinate clinical education activities in Calgary and Southern Alberta, including fieldwork preparation seminars, student and preceptor support during placements, and supervision of Independent Community Placements;
  • Some clinical service development and clinical service delivery may be required;
  • Work with the Academic Coordinator for Clinical Education and other faculty members to cultivate community relationships and new clinical placements;
  • Participate in the Department’s governance, curriculum development and implementation, program evaluation and accreditation activities;
  • Participate in Department of Occupational Therapy and Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine Committees as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of five years of occupational therapy experience in a variety of practice and or academic settings, including leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in an academic setting and a demonstrated history of, or commitment to, continuous quality improvement/engagement in professional teaching development activities, ideally related to teaching and learning;
  • Experience in clinical education coordination or student supervision/mentorship;
  • Capability to oversee research or scholarly capstone projects;
  • Familiarity and comfort with using distance/remote learning technology;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including conflict management skills.
  • Specific annual teaching, program delivery, scholarship, and teaching-related service and clinical service delivery responsibilities will be determined in negotiation with the Department Chair, responsive to the candidate's strengths and the department's requirements. Successful candidates should expect to work in a dynamic, team-focused environment and be open to a variety of professional development opportunities.

Additional Information:

  • Registration with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT) is required by the start date.
  • Although preference will be given to applicants with a Ph.D./Clinical Doctorate or post-professional Master’s degree, Occupational Therapists with an MScOT or BScOT with a strong clinical background and a passion for teaching are encouraged to apply.

Timeline:

Applications will be reviewed in March 2024, with interviews in April 2024 for a proposed start date of July 1, 2024.
