The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Departmental Director, Co-Learning Curriculum in Quality Improvement (QI).  Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as an Internal Medicine care specialist at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto and be a Clinician in Quality Improvement (CQI), Clinician Teacher (CT) or Clinician Educator (CE).  The term of appointment is three years, renewable once following a successful review. Effective start date will be July 1, 2024.

The Department of Medicine is an international leader in the championing of academic quality improvement and innovation. It was the first department in Canada to introduce a formal academic track in quality and innovation, which now includes over 80 full-time faculty across most of the department’s clinical divisions. Clinicians in Quality and Innovation (CQIs) hold a range of responsibilities within the health system and lead impactful work at the local, national and international levels. The Co-Learning in QI Curriculum has provided training in QI to residents and faculty members since 2011. The Curriculum serves a dual function. First, it supports residency programs to fulfill their accreditation requirement to teach QI. Second, it builds faculty capacity to both supervise QI projects and teach QI to others.  The number of participating programs ranges between 13-15 residency and fellowship programs each year. The Director will also support leadership within the broader Faculty of Medicine, by supporting other departments to implement similar co-learning programs. Over the years, the Department of Medicine has supported the Departments of Paediatrics, Surgery, Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, Anesthesia and Lab Medicine and Pathobiology with curriculum design.

The program runs from September to June during the academic year. It consists of two half-day workshops, periodic project meetings at the discretion of each team, and a final capstone event organized in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics. Course director responsibilities include:

• Teaching the workshops to faculty and residents who have chosen not to lead their own workshops (typically 8-10 programs involving 60-70 participants).
• Reviewing project proposals submitted twice a year by all participating programs and providing written feedback.
• Revising and updating curricular materials to account for advances in QI methods as well as the emergence of contemporary concepts in QI
• Preparing faculty participating in the program to supervise resident-led QI projects and teach the curriculum workshop as part of the program
• Liaising with Residency Program Directors and QI faculty leads regarding their program’s participation in the curriculum
• Working with the program coordinator to oversee all aspects of curriculum coordination
• Planning the year-end capstone event, which includes selecting and inviting the plenary speaker and organizing the elevator pitches and poster presentations
• Support faculty leads in other Departments to spread the co-learning model for resident education and faculty development

The Director, Co-Learning Curriculum in QI will possess advanced expertise in quality improvement. They should be conversant in major topics and trends in teaching and education in relation to QI training and should have proven skills in QI teaching, project supervision and mentorship. The Director sits on the Department of Medicine Executive and Education Executive Committees within the Department of Medicine. The Director reports directly to the Department of Medicine Vice-Chair of Education and will be provided administrative support for Co-Learning in QI curriculum in the form of a 0.25 FTE program coordinator support.

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada specialist and or be eligible for certification in the RCPSC and licensure in Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following University’s fully-affiliated sites: Baycrest, Sinai Health System, St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, and Women’s College Hospital; The Course Director will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $25,000.
