Detailed Job Description

In order to ensure your application is received by NAIT for thorough review and consideration, please apply directly through our Careers site at  www.nait.ca/careers

NOTE: This is a temporary position ending on or before March 30, 2029 with the possibility of extension.

Applied research at NAIT is focused on the economic sectors that are anchored in Alberta’s rich natural resources. We use the term applied deliberately because our interest is working on partner-initiated projects that have a clear line of sight to technology commercialization or adoption.

The Applied Research Chair in Energy will be a strategic leader in the NAIT Clean Technologies team. The Clean Technologies team is multidisciplinary, working with a broad range of partners to secure environmental sustainability through the research and development of circular economic methodologies, practices, and technologies. They bring to bear their chemical and biological sciences knowledge and experience to characterize and transform forestry and agricultural by-products into value-added products, and to develop remediation technologies to decontaminate sites, for example via microbiological or bioremediation. The underlying theme is grounded in the aim of ensuring that land and natural resources are returned to being valuable assets rather than liabilities. The research program is aided by generous support from Ovintiv Canada ULC.

The team is seeking a leader with significant experience and interest in growing the research program, bringing their own ideas to the areas of chemical synthesis and characterization of by-product streams resulting from industries of importance to Alberta’s economy; enzymatic catalysis as it relates to the production of biofuels, biomaterials, and other biochemicals; sustainable fuels production; and environmental remediation of industrially disturbed lands. Underpinning much of this work will be the ability to develop and validate new and innovative analytical chemistry protocols.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Develop a talent pool of highly qualified professionals in STEM subject matter, providing opportunities to gain experience of real-world technological challenges
  • Find end-use energy applications and solutions that benefit a broad array of commercial sectors
  • Reduce the environmental impact of industrial operations
  • Increase value-add opportunities for energy applications
  • Collaborate with other NAIT Applied Research Centres to further the research goals of partners
  •

    Key Responsibilities:

The incumbent will work with and support other Clean Technologies leaders to mentor an exceptional team of scientists, technical staff, and students.

    • Apply knowledge gained in industry and draw on experience to advance Applied Research’s goals with regard to cleaner energy and environmental sustainability
    • Provide scientific direction to a broad portfolio of active projects, predominantly laboratory based but with some field application as technologies are developed and tested
    • Provide strategic vision on how to grow the portfolio, multidisciplinary team, and facility capabilities
    • Engage with industry to identify and facilitate research needs and projects, staying current with regional business trends
    • Secure and manage a mix of private and government funding to support research activities and capital projects
    • Mentor junior staff as they develop project deliverables, milestones and budgets, and then as they execute on projects
    • Lead the hiring, training and development of research and technical staff
    • Ensure the continuation of a strong safety culture
    • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including academic schools, communities, government and industry
    • Support credit and non-credit curricula as a subject matter expert

    Skills & Abilities:

    • Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques, tools and methods, and the use of laboratory equipment and software
    • Exceptional and demonstrable leadership skills
    • Exceptional communication, both written and verbal, and ability to understand the needs of customers
    • Experience in presenting technical content to varied audiences
    • Experience in business case development, proposal development and securing significant levels of project funding

    Qualifications:

    • Graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in a relevant STEM field from an accredited post-secondary institution or equivalent relevant work experience
    • Experience working on projects in and for industry is highly desirable

Remuneration: $96,356.78 –$127,657.66 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Please submit a resume and cover letter to be considered for this opportunity.
