YOUR TASKS

In this position, you will support the functioning of the department of anaesthesia and analgesia of the Department of Small Animals, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine by working in the Anaesthesia Clinic. The main tasks are:

  • Participating in the proper organisation, administrative follow-up and execution of sedations and anaesthesia in function of the clinic planning.
  • Optimising the anaesthetic/analgesic plan for dogs and cats offered for anaesthesia necessary for diagnostic and surgical procedures, in consultation with the vets and specialists of the various disciplines.
  • Supervising interns and students during sedation/anaesthesia of dogs and cats and during the performance of anaesthetic procedures (e.g. placement of an IV catheter, taking blood samples, (non)-invasive blood pressure measurement, anaesthesia monitoring, loco-regional anaesthesia, TIVA, recovery monitoring,...).
  • Consultation on post-operative follow-up and analgesic treatment of hospitalised patients with veterinarians or specialists on duty.
  • Participating in the anaesthesia on-call service of the Small Animal Department. The percentage of on-call duty depends on the needs of the service. A high degree of flexibility is expected from the candidates.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • A Master's degree in Veterinary Medicine is required. For diplomas obtained outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence from NARIC must be submitted. The diploma requirements must be met on the date of appointment.
  • You have completed (a) further training(s) in anaesthesia and analgesia, in particular a completed residency at the European or American College of Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia and you are eligible to sit the certifying exam. It is an advantage if you hold an ECVAA or ACVAA diploma.
  • Education experience and participation in continuing education, conferences etc. in anaesthesia and analgesia of companion animals and related disciplines is recommended.
  • You have didactic and communicative qualities.
  • You are engaged in other professional activities and/or have demonstrable experience that can contribute to the quality of practice-related education.
  • You are interested in a teaching assignment in the mentioned domain.
  • You are interested in scientific and/or project-based research and service.
  • Considering the job content, there are high expectations regarding social and organisational skills. The candidate should be able to work as part of a team, to communicate fluently with the owners and with staff from different disciplines and of different levels (specialists, veterinarians, veterinary assistants, technical staff and students) and should have the necessary flexibility and resistance to stress to change the order of the tasks according to the service needs.
  • The ability to communicate fluently in Dutch or English is also a requirement.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a 1 year appointment, which may be renewed indefinitely for five years at a time. Attention : You cannot be appointed for a cumulative percentage of more than 30% as a Teaching Assistant at Ghent University.
  • Your appointment will start on 15 October 2022 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP3. More information about our salary scales .
