YOUR TASKS

 

  • At least 90% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation.
  • You perform research on microplastic pollution in agricultural soils in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg and look into the effect of plastic pollution on soil and plant health
  • You study the relation between microplastic pollution and plant health by performing greenhouse experiments on two model crops. You will measure plant growth, plant-microbe interactions and plant disease resistance. This will be done in collaboration with ILVO (Research Institute of agriculture, Fisheries and Food). You will need to be able to move to the ILVO sites in Melle/Merelbeke for sampling measurements and meetings on a regular base. 
  • You isolate, cultivate and study bacteria and fungi which can potentially break down plastic polymers. 
  • You make use of next-generation sequencing techniques to study plastic degrading microorganisms and their functions
  • You correlate microplastic data with data on soil nutrient composition and the microbial community obtained in your greenhouse trials. 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

 

  • You hold a masters degree preferably in biochemistry/biotechnology or bioscience engineering.
  • You have strong communication skills and have a proven track record for this (e.g. experience in citizen science projects, leading position in a project, …)
  • You are interested or have experience in characterizing microorganisms
  • You are interested or have experience in performing greenhouse trials
  • you are a teamplayer 

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

 

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 4 years
  • Your contract will start on 1/06/2024 at the earliest, but can be prolonged to a starting date at 1/09/2024 at the latest
