We (Laboratory for Cellular Metabolism and Metabolic Regulation; Fendt Lab) are a young and dynamic team of researchers performing cutting-edge cancer metabolism research with special focus on cancer metastasis, novel metabolic pathways and aim to broaden our research to the role of intratumor microbiome in cancer metabolism and cancer progression. We exploit mouse models, genetic engineering, metabolomics and single-cell & spatial multi-omics analysis to gain groundbreaking insights into metabolism as a driving force of cancer progression. Our work is published in high-profile journals such as Nature, Nature Cancer, Cell Reports, and Molecular Cell. We have strong international recognition and top collaboration partners all over the world.

The VIB-KULeuven Center for Cancer Biology (CCB), located on Campus Gasthuisberg of the University of Leuven, contributes to the better understanding of the biology that underlies cancer initiation, progression and metastatic dissemination with the ultimate goal of developing more effective and specific anti-cancer (combination) therapies. CCB is currently composed of more than 200 scientists in 13 independent research groups and units. Our scientific interest lies in various hallmarks of tumors and their microenvironment, including inflammation, metabolism, genetic and epigenetic regulating circuits. CCB fosters an interdisciplinary environment and close collaboration with the Comprehensive Cancer Center LKI and the University Hospital, both located on the same campus, to promote translational research.

VIB is an entrepreneurial and vibrant non-profit research institute in Flanders-Belgium with a clear focus on groundbreaking research in life sciences. About 1500 scientists and technologists from over 60 countries are based at the 5 Flemish Universities of Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp, Brussels and Hasselt, and are studying the broad spectrum of molecular mechanisms that regulate the functions of the human body, plants and microorganisms.

Are you interested in mitochondrial metabolism and the role of intratumor microbiome in cancer metastasis? You have a strong background (PhD) in mitochondrial metabolism, cell death and/or intratumor microbiome. Having successfully applied state-of-the-art genetic engineering technologies (such as CRISPR/Cas9), molecular biology techniques including but not limited to western blot, qPCR, FACS, immunohistochemistry (IHC), confocal microscopy, microbial analysis and cell culture techniques is a plus. You are interested in metabolism and metastasis research. You like taking the scientific and experimental lead on a challenging project. You can work independently but also like to collaborate within the team and other research groups. You aim for high impact and are highly ambitious.
