Research
The candidate conducts research in the field of private and/or economic law, with a focus on artificial intelligence. The candidate's research programme is expected to be consistent with existing research at KU Leuven Kulak and the relevant research units of the Faculty in Leuven. The field of "Law and Artificial Intelligence" lends itself ideally to interdisciplinary research. The candidate is also expected to engage with ongoing research on artificial intelligence at the Kulak campus and the Bruges campus in other disciplines.
The selected candidate is expected to:

• carry out independent research, develop an internationally competitive research programme and pursue excellent scientific results;
• establish and/or promote national and international research collaborations.

Teaching
The assignment involves teaching at Kulak (in Dutch and English) within the field of "Law and Artificial Intelligence". This includes the responsibility to teach (part of) one course at postgraduate level in addition to a teaching assignment in the regular program. 
Your teaching must be consistent with KU Leuven’s vision on activating and research-based education and learning. 
Service
The selected candidate's duties also include the provision of scientific, societal and internal services (such as serving on University and Faculty committees and availability to the government, society and press for science communication).
The selected candidate contributes to the academic flourishing and visibility of the campus, Faculty, and KU Leuven in general, by co-organising conferences, workshops, and other events. Active involvement on campus Kulak is expected.

We offer a part-time (10%) temporary employment in an intellectually challenging environment.
The vacancy is for a junior ZAP profile, and is also open to candidates who, at the time of application, have set a public defence date, and who will have defended their PhD before the position's start date. You will be recruited at the rank of assistant professor for a period of 5 years.

Eligibility criteria

The successful candidate: 

• has achieved excellence in study and research, and holds a PhD in Law (or at the very least has set a date for his/her public PhD defense that is prior to the starting date of the appointment) and can demonstrate expertise in the domain of "Law and Artificial Intelligence" through publications and other research achievements;
• has an excellent research track record, which includes (inter)nationally peer reviewed publications and/or other research achievements that demonstrate originality, abstraction and openness to intra- and/or interdisciplinary research. We will take into account your current career stage when evaluating your application;
• has experience with, or demonstrated interest in, multidisciplinary research; 
• has a well thought-out vision of and the capability to provide high-quality, research-based academic education and possesses excellent didactic skills. Teaching experience is a plus. If you have evaluations of previous teaching assignments at your disposal, please add them to your application; 
• possesses demonstrable organisational, social, professional and leadership skills, as well as the collegiality and flexibility necessary to join an existing team; 
• is an excellent team player.

Experience is not a requirement, but may be considered a plus.
The official administrative and teaching language of KU Leuven is Dutch. Because the successful candidate will have to take up different teaching assignments in Dutch soon after appointment, he/she is required to have mastery of Dutch at CEFR level C1 at the time of appointment. 
In addition, an excellent oral and written command of English is required. Knowledge of other languages, such as French, is a plus.
