Teaching missions

The teaching load will be part of the general orientations of the Master in Urban Planning and Territorial Development UMONS-ULB in Charleroi, focused on the objective of rethinking the conditions of feasibility of projects and territory with the objective of socio-ecological transition.

The designated person will be in charge of:

  • Theoretical courses, linked to its research themes, and the general orientations of the Master in Urban Planning:
    • Environmental analysis (water, soil, materials, etc.), 3 ECTS, Q1
    • Integration of living beings into city and territory projects, 2 ECTS, Q2
    • Elements of landscape and public spaces, 2 ECTS, Q1
    • Other matters to be specified depending on the skills of the designated person
  • A studio focused on spatial analysis and territorial dynamics, open to students from varied disciplinary backgrounds, 12 ECTS, Q1
  • One-off interventions will also be possible within the framework of the Master in Architecture as well as in the implementation of a certificate in town planning on a work-study basis.

The designated person will carry out coordination tasks related to:

  • Management and monitoring of internships linked to urban planning professions
  • Coordination and monitoring of final studies work

They will be involved in projects carried out by the teaching team of the Master in Urban Planning and Territorial Development UMONS-ULB in Charleroi such as the co-organization of international workshops, conference cycles, etc.

Research missions

The designated person will participate in research programs initiated within the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning and in cooperation with the Soci&ter Research Institutes (Research Institute for Societal and Territorial Development), Energy, and Risks of the University from Mons.

They will develop research in the field of town planning and regional development. In line with the objectives of the Master's degree, his/her research will allow the deepening of reflections linked to the need to rethink the conditions of feasibility of projects and territory with an objective of socio-ecological transition. For example, his/her research interests and sensitivities could involve the integration of environmental issues linked to the water cycle, soil preservation, maintenance and development of biodiversity, etc. within the design and operationalization processes of urban projects, landscapes and territories. These approaches call for inclusive and collaborative processes in order to bring together the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of cities and territories, taking into account lived territories and ecosystem balances.

They will contribute to the University's scientific publications, as well as to its development and influence. She will supervise doctoral theses.

Skills/Qualifications

The designated person will hold a Master's degree in architecture, civil engineer architect, landscape architect, geographical sciences, or other university training related to town planning or regional development or equivalent.

They will hold a doctorate in the art of building and urban planning or equivalent.

OR They will hold a doctorate in sciences (geography)/agronomic sciences and biological engineering, or equivalent, focused on themes that address urban planning and territorial development.


Specific Requirements

The designated person will have to develop research in the field of town planning and the environment, supported by peer-reviewed publications, possibly enriched by professional practice.

They will focus on the development of research through the project and the connection between theory, teaching and practice of the project.

They must demonstrate teaching experience, if possible supported by evaluations.

They must demonstrate sensitivity and skills related to the environmental issues of land use planning.

They must demonstrate an ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and show an interest in educational innovation focused on interdisciplinary teaching approaches.

Benefits

Any first appointment in the teaching body is made following an appeal to the Belgian Official Gazette, for a fixed period of three years, possibly renewable for a period of two years. To the extent that the teacher meets the objectives defined when hired, a permanent appointment could be decided during or at the end of the period covered by the designation. The language of instruction is French, knowledge of English is required. Takes office no earlier than April 15, 2024.
