Offer Description

The University of Vienna is internationally renowned for its excellence in teaching and research, and counts more than 7,500 academics from all disciplines. This breadth of expertise offers unique opportunities to address the complex challenges of modern society, to develop comprehensive new approaches, and educate the problem-solvers of tomorrow from a multidisciplinary perspective.

At the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science, the University of Vienna seeks to appoint a

Tenure-Track Professor in the field of Microbiology of aquatic ecosystems

The position:

Aquatic ecosystems constitute the majority of the biosphere and are crucial for the biogeochemical element cycles that enable life on Earth. However, our knowledge of the microorganisms catalyzing these cycles, their interactions, and the resulting interplay between the element cycles in aquatic systems is limited. Our goal is to better understand the biology of aquatic microbiomes and the impact of both natural and human influences on microbial processes.

We are seeking an individual with an excellent track record and international reputation in the field of aquatic microbiology, and a specific research interest in and documented experience with microbes that play key roles in major biogeochemical cycles. Research topics might include, but are not limited to, the diversity, physiology, and interactions of microorganisms involved in nitrogen and carbon cycling in marine and freshwater systems.

The candidate must have well-documented wet-lab expertise in methods for characterizing element-cycling microorganisms, and in analytical and isotope-based approaches for quantifying their activities. Experience with the analysis of microbial genomes and proteomes is required, as well as on-ship experience with experimental studies in aquatic microbiology during ocean field cruises.

The candidate is expected to work towards a better understanding of aquatic microorganisms and their roles and interactions in biogeochemical element cycles.

Your academic profile:

  • The successful applicant must have obtained an excellence grant - ERC Starting Grant, ERC Consolidator Grant or FWF-START award
  • Doctoral degree/PhD and at least two years post-doctoral experience at a university or other research institution
  • Two years of international research experience during or after doctoral studies
  • Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication record, international reputation
  • Gender and diversity competence
  • Interest in and commitment to contribute to the management of and shaping the academic environment at the centre
  • Experience in designing of and participating in research projects, ability to lead a research group and acquire third-party funding
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching at universities. Candidates are expected to be willing to teach students at all levels (bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level), to supervise academic theses and to promote junior colleagues

We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees.

We offer:

  • the opportunity to obtain a permanent position and eventual promotion to full professor; the initial contract as Assistant Professor is limited to six years, after positive evaluation of a qualification agreement the contract becomes permanent as Associate Professor; Associate Professors can be promoted to Full Professor through an internal competitive procedure.
  • a highly dynamic and internationally visible research environment
  • a wide range of support services offered by central service institutions
  • attractive working conditions in a city with a high quality of life
  • an attractive salary according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff (level A2) and an organisational retirement plan
