Food4Sustainability CoLab – Associação para a Inovação no Alimento Sustentável (F4S) opens a call for one (1) Initiation Research Fellowship under the project “Transform - Transformação digital do setor florestal para uma economia resiliente e hipocarbónica" with the funding support from Mobilizing Agendas/Alliances for Business Innovation - Component 5 of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), under call for proposals nr 02/C05-i01. 

Scientific Area(s): Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and related areas. 

Work Plan and Objectives: The proposed work plan encompasses several key actions to explore the application of organic polymers as coatings for granular fertilisers as well assess the impact of these coatings on factors such as nutrient release, biodegradability, and soil efficacy both pre- and post-application. The work includes an extensive physico-chemical and biological analyses to understand the coating's characteristics, structure, and uniformity, with close collaboration with industry partners that will ensure the scalability of methodologies tested, facilitating practical implementation. 

(i) research and development into the application of organic polymers as a coating for granular fertilisers;  

(ii) evaluating the influence of the coating on nutrient release, biodegradability and efficacy in the soil, before and after the coating is applied;  

(iii) carrying out physico-chemical and biological analyses to assess the characteristics and structure of the coating as well as its uniformity;  

(iv) interaction with industry, namely working closely with project partners with a focus on the scalability of the methodologies being tested;  

(v) processing and integrating data and results in line with the project's objectives;  

(vi) preparing reports and other materials to disseminate the project's results;  

(vii) participating in and organising activities to promote and disseminate the project

Skills/Qualifications

Applicants must hold the following requirements: 

- MSc degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or related areas.; 

- Academic training will be valued, as experience in research and development activities, as well as knowledge in the following areas: chemical and structural analysis of bio-based or synthetic polymers, formulation of polymeric mixtures; 

-Experience in quantifying and identifying compounds using different techniques, including chromatography (LC and GC), spectrophotometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy.  

-Experience in analysing and statistically processing data. 

-High motivation to work in a team and good interpersonal communication skills. 

-Autonomy capacity and task management. 


Specific Requirements

Fellowship recipients / Admission requirements: Any national or foreign citizens of European Union member states, citizens of third countries, stateless persons and citizens benefiting from political refugee status who meet the requirements to be enrolled in a non-academic degree course in an area related to the work plan of the grant are eligible to apply to this call. 

Are considered “Non-academic degree courses” the ones referred in paragraph e) of number 3 of article 4 of Decree-Law nr 74/2006, from 24th March, in its current version, as long as they are developed in association and cooperation between a higher education institution and at least one R&D Unit in accordance with the provisions of paragraph e) of Article 3 of FCT Fellowship Regulation.

Benefits

Predicted start date, duration and renewal conditions: The fellowship contract is predicted to start in June 2024, for a period of six (6) months on an exclusive basis, eventually renewable until the maximum stipulated in the applicable regulation not exceeding the eligibility period of the project (September 2025). 

Work place and Scientific Orientation: The research activities will be developed at Beira Interior University and Food4Sustainability CoLab, under the supervision of Doctor Ângelo Luís and Doctor Luís Martins. 

Fellowship financial conditions: The fellow will benefit from a monthly stipend in the amount of 1.259,64€. The amount will be paid by wire transfer at the end of each month. The fellow will also benefit from a personal accident insurance to execute the proposed research activities as well as the right to Social Security through Voluntary Social Insurance regimen, if wanted, under the terms of Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social, and the contributions costs will be supported by the research project. 


Eligibility criteria

- MSc degree certificate; 

- Candidate’s declaration of honour stating that will be enrolled in a non-academic degree course in an area related to the work plan at the contract signation.  

The non-compliance with these requirements determines the immediate rejection of the application. In case the applicant does not have yet the required degree certificate, a declaration of honour stating the conclusion of the necessary qualifications for the purposes of this process will be accepted and must be sent by the end date of the call. 

 


Selection process

Jury evaluation and selection: The applications will be assessed by a jury composed of Doctor Luís Martins (F4S), Doctor Ângelo Luís (UBI), Ing. Gonçalo Amorim (F4S), Ing. Nuno Serra (F4S). 

Selection methods: Curriculum evaluation (50%) and Interview (50%). Only candidates who obtain a classification equal to or greater than 12 in Curriculum evaluation will be selected for interview.  

If none of the candidates has the appropriate profile to the nature of the tasks to be carried out and their good performance, the selection panel reserves the right not to award the scholarship to any of the candidates applied. 

Deadlines and application process: The call will be open from 13th of May until 27th of May 2024 (10 working days).  Applications should be submitted only by email – [email protected] with subject title “250.10.101.2024.001 Transform – BI”. 

The non-compliance with these requirements determines the immediate rejection of the application. 

Notification of results: The evaluation results will be announced within 15 days after the termination of the applications submission deadline, by writing and publishing a jury meeting minute at Food4Sustainability CoLab office with all process of recruitment, evaluation and selection including a list of all excluded and admitted candidates and for these last ones, their classification. All candidates will be notified by email. 

Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After notification, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 15 working days, from application deadline.
