Institute for Sociology and Social Research
Fulltime, 40 hours/week
Starting July 01, 2024, and ending after 6 years

You want to teach and research as well as be an active part of the scientific community in your field? You enjoy working on questions at the interface of economy and society, politics, and the environment and you want to contribute to developing related scholarship? This position is the next step in your scientific career.

What to expect
  • Develop your own research profile: You will develop an internationally oriented research profile in an area of relevance for economic sociology, and work on your own research project to advance your scientific qualification and promote your academic career.
  • Write articles for international outlets: You will pursue your own publication plans with a clear orientation towards high-quality international peer-reviewed journals and related activity in international conferences and networks.
  • Collaborate on research of joint interest: You will take part in collaborative research at the Institute or at the Department, actively engage in exchange with your colleagues with a view to create synergies, develop shared research agendas and joint publications.
  • Teach courses and develop your teaching skills: You will teach courses or course units in English and German (usually 4 hours per week each term), with an emphasis on theoretical perspectives, empirical research methods, and academic writing, related to matters of the economy, society, politics and the environment, and take part in university-pedagogical courses.
  • Supervise or co-supervise bachelor and Master’s theses: You will (co-)supervise a number of theses each year, on the bachelor level in economic and social sciences, including business, and on the Master’s level in socioeconomics and social-ecological economics and policy.
  • Support work at the Institute and the Department: You will take part in collaborative and administrative tasks at the Institute and on the Department level, e.g., recruit bachelor theses, organise academic events, promote the Department’s new study branch “Economy, Environment, Politics” (WUPol).

What you have to offer
  • Academic degree: You have a doctoral/PhD degree in sociology, socioeconomics, or other economic and social-scientific disciplines if the dissertation project addressed questions of sociological relevance (please provide an abstract of the thesis).
  • Pertinent research profile: Your prior academic work and your research proposal for the upcoming years (please include an outline of ca. 5 pages) documents a strong interest and sustained effort in promoting sociological perspectives on the economy, which also brings in law, politics, and/or the environment.
  • Research outcome and publication record: Your capacity for research is documented in high-quality theses and, ideally, first publications in peer-reviewed outlets relevant to the subject area of this position (please include a writing sample / excerpt of no more than 8.000 words), as well as related academic activities.
  • Teaching experience: You already have work experience in a university setting or similar academic context, including teaching, tutoring, and thesis supervision, or similar pedagogical experience, so that you can immediately take on related tasks.
  • High proficiency in English: Given the international orientation of our work, we expect high proficiency in (written and spoken) academic English, in addition to advanced German-language skills, which are likewise required for teaching and supervision.
  • Complete application: A complete and elaborate application includes documents, references and statements for all the above aspects. Please also include some notes on your motivation for taking on such an academic position in the cover letter.
