About the opportunity

We are in a period of exciting development within our External Engagement portfolio, striving to achieve a contemporary and integrated service offering aligned with the university’s ambitious strategic objectives. As a result, we are seeking a strategic and proactive Industry Theme Lead to work closely with leading academics, leaders in policy and industry and other stakeholders across multi-sectoral themes In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to build the capacity of the University to engage and translate our research and teaching excellence into outcomes that respond to community, industry and policy priorities.

As the Industry Theme Lead, you will provide high-level strategic advice and guidance around the government policy landscape and industry drivers including those pertaining to innovation, impact and labour market trends.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • partner with relevant internal academic leaders to identify strategic priorities and partners (across industry, government, community and non-profit,) that can advance the research, education, and reputational ambitions of the University
  • establish and convene a “Cluster” network of internal and external stakeholders across priority sectors to cultivate and deepen mutually beneficial partnerships that support the University’s engagement objectives as set within the new strategic plan
  • prepare and present well considered industry focussed proposals, presentations and briefings that engage and excite prospective partners and funders
  • work with the Director to design and operationalise engagement plans for internal and external stakeholders that include communications, events, stakeholder management, engaged research and education opportunities
  • provide sector specific insights, market intelligence and provide thought leadership and guidance to University Executive for informed decision making
  • maintain a strong enterprise-wide understanding of research, education and reputational strengths and leverage these for maximum impact
  • represent the University of Sydney at high level networking and industry events.

About you

  • proven success in developing and implementing engagement strategies that deliver quality outcomes against agreed milestones in a higher education or other complex institution
  • experience in mapping, negotiating, and managing successful partnership agreements, with an understanding of the partnership process with government, corporate and NFP organisations
  • demonstrated ability to build strong collaborations across a University setting with academic leaders, directors and professional staff across central portfolios, research institutes and faculty
  • experience in leading and personally delivering major programs in complex environments with multiple organisations and stakeholders
  • strong analytical skills and an ability to research, formulate and present high quality briefings to internal and external audiences, prepare proposals and presentations
  • highly developed relationship management skills and the ability to operate with a high degree of tact and professionalism across all levels of diverse internal and external environments
  • outstanding presentation, facilitation and influencing skills to drive key messaging and ideas through a variety of channels.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
