The Curtin Medical School (CMS) is calling upon skilled Technical Officers to join our dynamic Laboratory Services Team!


Your new role

As a Technical Officer working as part of the Laboratory Services Team, you will primarily provide support for the conduct of teaching laboratories in the disciplines of Molecular Genetics and Immunology but may also be required to assist in other disciplines such as Biochemistry.

Your role may also include supervision of other team members assisting you as well as providing back-up for the Technical Specialists where appropriate. Amongst other duties, you will be assisting managing relevant consumable stocks, assisting with equipment and laboratory maintenance as well as maintaining a range of documentation for laboratory procedures.
Generic Responsibilities include

  • Supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students in class, including guidance on the use of experimental processes using relevant equipment.
  • Conduct and ensure all staff and students participate in Safety Inductions and that Health and Safety criteria are adhered to at all times.
  • Liaise with Technical Specialists in the design and implementation of new teaching classes in Immunology and Molecular Genetics.
  • Prepare in advance undergraduate lab classes that are conducted in your area and ensure they run successfully, safely and provide a high-quality experience for students.
  • Prepare materials and ensure laboratory facilities/field work resources are prepared in advance and well organised for teaching and research activities.
  • Produce documents, correspondence and drawings and contribute to the preparation of reports.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for all aspects of operations including safety, hazardous substances, equipment and workspaces.
  • In collaboration with relevant academic staff maintain undergraduate laboratory class procedures and workbooks.
  • Maintain general and specialised laboratories and equipment, undertaking safety checks, servicing and repair as appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot and undertake basic and regular maintenance of the equipment.
  • Monitor and initiate ordering of materials, consumables and equipment so supplies are maintained.
  • Participate in stocktakes and chemical audits.
  • Participate in a multi-skilling and professional development programs to ensure operational and technical knowledge is up to date with advances in the discipline.
  • Seek out opportunities for process improvement and advise team leader.

What we’re looking for
Essential Criteria:
  • A degree qualification in a relevant discipline with relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated high-level communication skills with an ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work autonomously as directed as well as operate as part of a team when required.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills in a laboratory environment
  • A commitment to providing a safe and high-quality learning experience for our students

Desirable Criteria:
  • Experience in related disciplines such as Biochemistry and Microbiology.
  • Experience with sterile techniques and use of autoclaves.
  • Familiarity with OGTR policies and guidelines.

The Curtin Medical School was formed in 2021 to bring together the Disciplines of Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Laboratory Medicine, and Medical Radiation Science.
