  • Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University

About The Position:


Under the direction of the Technical Coordinator - Chemistry & Life Sciences, you will be responsible for ensuring safe day to day operational functions within the laboratory spaces supported by the Chemistry & Life Sciences Technical Services Team, by providing technical support to teaching and research activities within those laboratories.

This is a practical hands-on role, which will see you provide technical support to users of the spaces and ensure designated areas are running effectively and safely, in compliance with legislative requirements and RMIT policies and procedures.  Setting up and preparing for undergraduate practical classes to ensure smooth delivery is an integral part of this position and will make up a very significant percentage of work in this role, as is the cleaning of used materials, equipment & laboratories, and the decontamination & disposal of waste.

Experience in a higher-education research or technical support role, while not required, would be considered favourably.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have: 

  • Experience preparing & supporting undergraduate practical classes, with particular emphasis on Microbiology, while also having competency in broader biological & chemistry fields.

  • The ability to work individually as well as collaboratively in a team and be open to assisting others to meet the teams’ commitments & obligations.

  • Experience in microbiological culture techniques & identification.

  • Experience handling & processing biohazardous waste material.

  • Proven track record of building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including understanding and embracing a client focused framework.

  • Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation with knowledge of other field or industry regulations or standards related to the field within the scope of the service area.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of working in accordance to the RMIT value statements or similar frameworks in other organisations.
