About You


The Animal Technician, reporting to the Technical Coordinator, supports laboratory and workspace users by ensuring optimal animal care, husbandry, and health monitoring in accordance with SOPs. Responsibilities include maintaining detailed records and upholding high standards of animal welfare. This role is integral to RMIT RAF's service delivery and may involve varying duties depending on operational needs, such as changes in supported animal species, quantities, and research requirements.

Under the Technical Coordinator's guidance, the Animal Technician contributes to laboratory upkeep, implements OHS standards, and promotes best practices.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:

  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining inbred, outbred and GMO breeding colonies and proficiency in associated husbandry and identification procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining laboratory-based instruments equipment relevant to the animal research field and generating appropriate operating documentation.

  • Proven track record of building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including understanding and embracing a client focused framework.

  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to comply with current legislation, regulatory bodies, codes and standards relating to the ethical use and care of live animals for scientific research purposes.

  • Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation with knowledge of other field or industry regulations or standards related to the field within the scope of the service area.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of working in accordance to the RMIT value statements or similar frameworks in other organisations.
