About UNSW IT and the role:

UNSW IT is part of the Operations Division at UNSW. The IT team at UNSW plays a critical role in enabling the University’s teaching, research, and industry engagement.  Would you be keen to make a difference and work in higher education ?

The Team Leader will be responsible for the leadership, management and support relevant for their Technology Delivery team discipline. including managing all stakeholder engagement and quality assurance, ensuring alignment to the strategic direction of the UNSW Customer Services Directorate. The position is part of UNSW IT but will work closely with the Faculties and Divisions to ensure the services operate within their defined metrics and to maximize uptime for the UNSW storage environment. The role has leadership responsibility for a team of system specialists and senior specialists, and the incumbent will build and support a high-performance culture within their team and foster a commitment to continuous improvement.

The role of Team Leader reports to the Head of Technology Delivery or Manager of Cloud Operations and has a number of direct reports in the team they lead.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Provide day to day leadership and management in the operational needs of the team ensuring work efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of tasks to customers to achieve operational and strategic goals.
  • Plan, assign, and supervise the work of the team in relation to products and applications using agile techniques and also ensure coverage across the team and cross-functional collaboration of knowledge and technical expertise.
  • Lead the evaluation, development and implementation of end-to-end infrastructure solutions, ensuring ownership and accountability for the implementation of all deliverable outcomes.
  • Develop, review, update and ensure adherence to relevant policies, procedures and other documentation required to support the UNSW IT Managed Systems with the Team’s portfolio.
  • Provide expert level services and advice in relation to the implementing, management and operation of the IT Managed environments within the team’s portfolio.
  • Ensure the IT disaster recovery plans for all of the team’s portfolio platforms are in place and ensure that these plans are regularly tested for all production systems to ensure adequate contingency.
  • Ensure appropriate security is provided to all services and that appropriate controls are developed and in place to meet the University’s Cyber security policies, goals and objectives.
  • Assess, manage and mitigate operational risks, and if necessary, advise and instigate any risk management actions to ensure the technology services operate within an acceptable level of risk.
  • Be available for On-Call / After Hours support on a rotating basis, typically one week per month as well as weekend and After Hours work as required.
  • Manage complex risks, issues and financials, and work with the team to ensure appropriate solutions are in place.
  • Continuously improve and optimize the way in which the Team works, including practices, organization and resourcing.

Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant Tertiary qualification in at more than one relevant domain disciplines (AWS, Azure, Linux, Windows, Database, Networking) with extensive industry experience or equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience in implementing, configuring, maintaining and supporting a large-scale IT environment.
  • Experience in leading, managing and mentoring a team ensuring growth in both breadth and depth of role, tasks assigned and role modelling the UNSW behaviours.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Qualifications and/or experience in IT models, concepts and frameworks including ITIL with exposure to SIAM, ITSM and other IT management frameworks.
  • Best practice leadership of Change Control methods for adding, removing or changing software, hardware and configurations in production and non-production environments across public cloud and private infrastructure environments.
  • Demonstrated expert level knowledge in applicable technology domains needed to support UNSW IT environments (e.g Cloud)
  • Experience in the development and implementation of policies and procedures, infrastructure.
