Who are we looking for?

Take your leadership career to the next level by joining Faculty Operations in the Faculty of Science as a Supervising Technician – Environmental, Geological and Biological Sciences. 

In this role, you’ll provide effective leadership to a specialised team responsible for technical support for practical teaching and research activities in supported laboratories. 

You’ll have the opportunity to drive support strategies and operational planning that enables sustainable research, learning and teaching programmes. About Faculty Operations

The Faculty Operations organisational area consists of Professional Staff providing operational support to the faculty, and includes:
•    Financial Management
•    Technical Services & Space Management

The Technical Services & Space unit comprises of:
•    Chemistry and Physical Sciences technical support team
•    Environmental, Geological and Biological Sciences technical support team
•    Space, Assets, Logistics and Technology support team

Faculty Operations is led by the Faculty Operations Manager and is supported by the Senior Management Accountant and the Technical Services & Space Manager..

What you need to succeed

  • Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to the completion of a postgraduate qualification in conjunction with extensive relevant work experience in a laboratory operations environment. Expertise in related biology, environmental science or earth science disciplines or working in a university environment or a large organisation is considered beneficial.
  • Previous experience and demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and manage an effective team including monitoring performance and the provision of
    feedback, workload allocation, and
    identifying training and development needs to achieve high quality business outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working partnerships with staff both internal and external to the work unit, and at all levels of an organisation, and from culturally diverse backgrounds, all in the pursuit of service excellence.
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to display initiative, contribute new ideas, critically evaluate current equipment and systems and processes, and contribute to ongoing improvements in the provision of services at a strategic level.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an allocated annual budget to ensure a technical services area is maintained sustainably at an agreed level of quality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of health, safety and environment practices and regulations pertinent to research environments, including GM PC2 (OGTR), Biosecurity and domestic Quarantine compliance.
