About You


The Student Counsellor is part of the CAPS team that ensures the delivery of timely, clinically sound mental health support to students in face-to-face and e-modes of consultation across all RMIT campuses.  The role involves facilitating the personal, emotional, social, and educational transition and adjustment of students with an emphasis on brief outcome informed interventions.  

The student Counsellor, CAPS has excellent assessment and clinical skills, when responding to clients presenting with serious mental health issues or in crisis.  This role is required to provide secondary and tertiary consultation to RMIT staff in connection with students’ issues. 

The Student Counsellor is required to work flexibly and cooperatively within a diverse and skilled team of specialists and other colleagues, building strong working relationships, and regularly communicating with a range of internal and external contacts. 

To be successful in this position, you will have as a minimum:

  • High-level competency in brief, outcome-informed counselling approaches, including strong assessment, intervention, and referral skills, with experience in client outcome evaluation.  

  • Experience working with high-risk students and in assessment and treatment of complex mental health issues.

  • Has demonstrated experience in dealing with specific concerns of diverse student cohorts including students from equity groups and international students.

  • Has experience in client outcome evaluation.

  • Is open to change, embracing new work practices, including changes to software and digital technology, and changing service delivery requirements.

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Social Work or Psychology, with significant post qualification and relevant experience in case management and counselling.
