About This Opportunity 

The Senior Research Assistant/Technician provides technical research support and subject matter expertise in support of MIWATCH activities at all stages of the research life-cycle in the lab, field and in report delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supports logistical aspects of fieldwork at mine waste sites

  • Assists in the running of mine waste lab-based studies, under supervision of senior staff

  • Assists in the conduct of major MIWATCH field sampling campaigns across Australia

  • Undertakes maintenance and upkeep of facilities and equipment


Safety

  • Contributes to the safe and efficient operation of research equipment, infrastructure, methodologies and protocols

  • Ensures the appropriate storage, handling and disposal of chemicals, equipment, stores and/or samples/specimens

Research and administrative support

  • Assists with drafting research documentation, including ethics and funding applications

  • Undertakes literature searches and reviews

  • Assists with routine team administration

  • Assists with preparing reports, graphs, figures and presentations on research outcomes at different stages of the research cycle outcomes


About the WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre (BRC)

The WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre (BRC) is apart of UQ's Sustainable Minerals Institute and is focused on creating industry impact through applied research and training in the areas of mining and geology.

BRC maximises the value of geoscientific data across the mining value chain in the pursuit of sustainable and responsible mineral production. All of our staff have strong industry links and deep knowledge of real world industry challenges. Our staff have a unique combination of industry and academic backgrounds, with strong academic track records complemented by over 150 years of combined real world industry experience.

The Centre’s capabilities combine economic geology, geophysics, environmental geochemistry, geotechnical, underground mass mining, mineral chemistry, structural geology and tectonics, geometallurgy, mineral processing and data analytics. This is Full-time, 100% FTE Fixed-term position through to March 2025.

At HEW level 5, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $77,396.47 - $86,029.78, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $90,553.87 - $100,654.84 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.


About You  

The Research Professionals (Technical) Job Family provides a range of technical and specialist skills and services, which support and enable research activities. This role involves lab and fieldwork as well as report writing and literature reviews.

  • Completion of a degree level qualification in environmental geoscience; or completion of a Diploma with relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training

  • Excellent practical research skills and experience in relevant research methodology or techniques required for this body of research

  • Experience in acid base accounting lab experiments and mine waste fieldwork

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues

  • Ability to work independently on routine procedures

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Well-organised, methodical and self-motivated

  • Previous experience in a similar role would be considered favourably.
