About Us
Our Food Environments Team, situated within ECU’s Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute, is at the forefront of pioneering research aimed at understanding the influence of children's environments on their dietary habits and the risk of overweight and obesity. We are dedicated to creating healthy community, school, and consumer food environments by ensuring equitable access, availability, and affordability of healthier foods and beverages. Our mission extends to reducing the availability and marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages in the places where children live, play, eat, and go to school.

Through collaborative efforts with State and Local Governments, key health agencies, urban planners, and urban designers, our research provides essential evidence supporting policy and practice changes. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate equitable, health-promoting communities that encourage healthy eating habits. 

The role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Research Fellow to join our dynamic team. This position offers a unique opportunity to take a leading role in the development and management of a range of ongoing research projects within the food and nutrition field. Working closely with our Team Lead, you will be instrumental in delivering and overseeing high-quality research.

You will also demonstrate personal attributes that are congruent with the University’s values of Integrity, Respect, Rational Inquiry Personal Excellence and Courage.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a range of research projects in the food and nutrition field.
  • Ensure project governance mechanisms are in place for all projects including ethics requirements (applications and amendments), data management, risk management, reporting, and compliance with funding and contractual obligations.  
  • Conduct comprehensive qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
  • Write grant applications to secure funding for research initiatives.
  • Author high impact scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Supervision of project staff and HDR students.
  • Develop policy briefs based on research findings to influence public health policy.
  • Present at local, national and/or international conferences.
  • Engage with the media to disseminate research findings and raise public awareness.
  • Drive, build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships across various sectors to advance research objectives.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support the team's goals.

Requirements:
  • PhD in Nutrition, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in food and nutrition research, particularly in areas related to food environments and their impact on health.
  • Excellent writing skills with a strong track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and securing research funding.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with experience in both qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and with external partners.
  • Commitment to creating equitable and health-promoting food environments.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and Working With Children Check. 

Benefits & Remuneration

This full time, fixed term position attracts remuneration of $134,035 to $154,013 plus 17% University superannuation contribution.
