The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300. The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney. It comprises the School of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Psychology, and Physics. It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.

The Senior Project Officer – STEMM Champions Program will be responsible for project managing the STEMM Champions Program to support our women, non-binary and gender diverse PhD and early career staff to become STEMM professionals. The 12-month cross-faculty pilot incorporates training in presentation skills, communications, leadership and professional development, networking and mentoring. The Program contributes to achieving Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) objectives aligned with the UNSW 2025 Strategic Plan.


About the role

  • $106k - $115k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 12 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Senior Project Officer reports to the UNSW Science Strategy Manager. This role will have significant working relationships with various Faculty teams in Science, Engineering, and Medicine & Health. Strong partnerships must be built with industry and STEMM associations and effective external stakeholder engagement is required, including with diverse target groups, students, school teachers, and career advisors.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Develop, implement and manage the Program end to end, including relationship management, stakeholder engagement, program design, budget monitoring, evaluating and revising plans.
  • Manage and support the recruitment and induction process for the Program participants.
  • Ensure the program content and outreach events align with the intended objectives; high performance outcomes associated with presentation and communication skills, leadership and professional development, networking and mentoring opportunities.
  • In conjunction with the with staff in Engineering and Medicine & Health, regularly review and manage the requirements of the program.
  • Develop program content in consultation with the Faculty, relevant UNSW student support teams, People and Culture, external facilitators and other key contributors.
  • Prepare program materials for various workshops and events (teaching/research/student/general administrative support functions).
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Tertiary degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline with subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of relevant education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience independently delivering projects within agreed timeframes.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering training and development programs associated with higher education or professional development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge regarding equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives and issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure with sensitive and confidential matters.
  • High level communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills with the ability to build relationships and interact effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proactive working style demonstrating efficiency, initiative and attention to detail.
  • High level computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
