About This Opportunity 

The Senior Network Engineer will focus on providing high-level network engineering support for the Universities diverse data and communications network infrastructure covering Core, Data Centre, campus, and remote site connectivity. This is a position requiring experience providing technical and analytical services to projects, some project management, specification, and input into budgetary planning.

Working within the Infrastructure project team, you will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of secure and highly available networks, assisting with IT change and implementation projects as part of continuous improvement to UQ’s Network services.

The position reports to the Senior Manager, Infrastructure Build and Delivery and will be required at times to direct other professional or technical staff on work relating to specific tasks or projects.

Key responsibilities:

  • Adopt and promote sound cyber security practices in compliance with UQ’s Cyber Security Policy, procedures, and standards.

  • Design, implementation, installation, and maintenance of network infrastructure.

  • Provide higher level support and maintenance of IT including diagnosing, responding to, and resolving complex problems; providing phone and email support to clients; completing timesheets for accurate billing; and liaising with internal and external staff on advanced issues.

  • Undertake design and development of significant information technology projects. Research and development of network technologies to enhance existing services.

  • Consult on technical IT aspects for ITS clients and represent ITS on non-technical matters, including staff selection and other university committees.

  • Investigate, evaluate, and report on new equipment, systems, processes, and standards.

  • Lead and/or supervise project teams, as well as participate in an on-call roster rotation schedule.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to three years.

At HEW level 7, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $96,649 - $105,244, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $113,080 - $123,136 annually.  As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.


About You  

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or computer engineering or a related discipline, plus extensive relevant experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education, experience, and training.

  • Experience in the delivery of large-scale networking uplift and replacement programs in an enterprise environment.

  • Exposure to Software Defined Networking technologies and products, specifically Cisco SDA, DNAC, ACI or other relevant technologies.

  • High level skills in analysis, design, development, operation, and maintenance of contemporary network and communications infrastructure. Specific knowledge in any of the following areas will be highly regarded: Network accounting, network security, IP Telephony, server farm networking, Internet links and BGP, disaster recovery planning, MPLS, Wireless LAN technologies, ACI or other relevant technologies.

  • Experience Scripting in Python, NodeJS, PHP or other relevant programming languages to achieve automation

  • Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with the demonstrated ability to interact effectively with clients.

  • Self-motivated and able to work proactively to objectives with limited guidance and demonstrated ability to organise own time and approach tasks methodically with a clear attention to detail.

  • Experience in working on project teams and at times guiding technical decision making to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Experience in providing technical leadership and guidance to a technical team to resolve complex issues.

Desirable:

  • Relevant industry certifications, in particular CCNA and CCNP.

  • Exposure to Other areas of IT infrastructure namely, Compute, Storage, Firewalls and Public Cloud Services.

  • Exposure to a quality management framework/certification system such as ITIL.

  • Exposure to a formal service management and project management methodology.
