About This Opportunity 

The Senior Manager, Infrastructure and Projects role ensures the School’s buildings infrastructure and facilities are maintained to the highest standards. To support a safe, secure, and comfortable environment for students and staff of the School.

For our complex and advanced buildings, and unique research sites, it is important to ensure that the building and school sites are well-maintained and equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support the School’s operations, research and teaching activities.

Key responsibilities will include: 

Leadership and governance

  • Advise the School Executive on regulations, policies and guidelines as they relate to the infrastructure assets of the School.

  • Provide reports relevant to the infrastructure assets of the School including space utilisation, infrastructure maintenance, and hazards.

  • Lead a team of specialist Laboratory Floor Managers.

  • Contribute to the development of strategic and operational documentation as relevant to the role (for example the operational manuals and, office/laboratory space management principles).

  • Demonstrate School and University values through visible leadership, for example by conducting regular site/laboratory visits. 

Safe and effective operations

  • In partnership with the School Health Safety and Wellness Manager, ensure healthy and safe working environments by investing in actions which protect health and well-being of staff, students and visitors, and promote a positive safety culture.

  • Advise and guide staff and students on safe operating principles or protocols for general lab equipment and facilities.

  • Administer and develop systems, such as the share equipment program, that support collaboration within the School and across the University.

  • Advocate and negotiate on behalf of the School to resolve complex space and infrastructure issues, often across multiple sites and with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.

  • Monitor and evaluate all aspects of project implementation, relevant to the role, including risk and contingency management.

  • Partner with research and teaching staff to recommend and procure new equipment (negotiating with suppliers as needed) to ensure good outcomes for materials, processes, infrastructure and equipment required for School activities.

Sustainability and growth

  • Review space proposals (including operational, health and safety impacts) for new research projects, including large scale pilot plants

  • Identify gaps between current state and what is required for the future infrastructure and equipment needs of the School.

  • Develop, maintain and cost an approved equipment replacement program for the School and oversee maintenance of the School asset register.

  • Support preparation of infrastructure and facility relevant bids, including ARC LIEF, and bids for consideration by UQ’s Capital Management Group.

  • Oversee the development of school facility budgets, costing models, quarterly forecasts and 3-year budget projections and manage the achievement of meeting budget.

Other

  • On-call, BMS contact as may be required.

  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.

This is a full-time (100%), permanent position at a HEW level 9.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $124,996.74 - $132,185.52, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $146,246.19 - $154,657.06 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

About You  

Essential

  • Qualifications and training equivalent to a postgraduate degree in Engineering, Science or related field; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Extensive experience in safety management and maintenance management within scientific/chemical facilities, specifically in relation to chemicals, gases, pressure, temperature, and biological hazards.

  • Proven ability to manage large scale projects with multiple stakeholder involvement.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, including the ability to influence and negotiate with school staff, property and facilities division, contractors and suppliers.  

  • Ability and understanding of how to interpret and apply university policy and procedures as they relate to HSW, building and laboratory operations and maintenance. 

  • Natural problem solver and lateral thinker, with excellent negotiating and decision-making skills. 

  • Ability to prioritise competing work demands and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to lead a team including across multiple sites.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in managing an advanced building with complex equipment and safety requirements.  

  • Experience in managing and developing infrastructure in a higher education or research context, and/or detailed understanding of the business of academics and researchers.
