About This Opportunity 

We are seeking an experienced, agile and highly-motivated leader to manage the effective and efficient operations of the School of Education. This is an important leadership role responsible for delivering a wide range of high-quality services in support of School outcomes. As School Manager, you will supervise all operational functions of the School to ensure the organisational and financial sustainability of the School’s and Faculty’s core functions. 

The School Manager is the primary advisor to the Head of School (HoS) and wider School community on all matters pertaining to University, Faculty and School policies, operations, legislative requirements, budget management and core business processes.  The School Manager is part of the School Executive, contributing to School strategic and operational management, service design and delivery within the broader Faculty and UQ professional services operating environment. Delivering high quality teaching, research, and operational goals in the University requires collaboration with many offices and organisational areas.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: 

Supervisory and Personnel Management

  • Supervises administrative personnel in the School and provides leadership in the day-to-day operations of the School.

  • Manages the performance planning and review for all administrative personnel (in accordance with the Recognition and Development Program), and coordinates office staff development and training needs assessment.

  • In liaison with the Head of School and the Faculty’s Human Resource Professional Services Team (PST), implements appropriate measures to ensure that potential staff performance issues are identified, managed, and documented

  • Prepares staff position descriptions, selection criteria, advertisements and appointment expiry documents as necessary.

  • In liaison with the Head of School, manages the appointment and payment of casual academic staff.

Strategy and Operations

  • Establishes best-practice systems and procedures to facilitate the effective administration of the School and continually evaluates these systems.

  • Provides management assurance (monitoring, audit and review) that current and emerging risks are being managed through effective general management controls within the School

  • Manages space allocations for staff, research assistants, tutors, casual staff and postgraduate students.

  • Develops and implements a plan for continual refurbishment and upgrading of school space and equipment.

Financial Management

  • Monitors monthly and quarterly financial performance in terms of the School’s budget, and advises the Head of School on any trends and, if necessary, appropriate corrective action to ensure acceptable outcomes.

  • Exercises financial delegation for the School as required.

  • Ensures compliance with University policy and procedures/requirements, and provides policy, procedural, budgetary and financial advice to the HOS

  • Assists with the development and funding of agreements with outside agencies.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 31 December 2024 (with possibility of extension).

At HEW level 9, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $127,496 - $134,829, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $149,171 - $157,750 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.


About You  

  • A postgraduate degree with relevant experience in a university or similar environment; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and /or education/training is required.

  • Work experience in a relevant leadership role, preferably within a tertiary education environment, with a focus on financial and budget planning, human resource management, and student / academic administration and facilities management. Your financial acumen will be strong given the focus of this role on financial and budget planning and data analysis.

  • Ability to act independently and take initiatives with minimal direction, within established policies and guidelines, in a complex financial and human resource environment.

  • An advanced ability to devise administrative strategies, policies and systems and to analyse and interpret resulting data, accepting responsibility for provision of a consistently high quality, professional level of service with a strong client focus.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, in particular experience in leading, motivating and developing multi-site teams to achieve operational objectives and balance competing priorities.

  • High level communication and interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to liaise and consult; edit, write and prepare reports and submission; negotiate complex issues and manage change; and communicate with diverse groups.

  • An awareness and understanding of the culture and challenges facing a global university with ambitions to be consistently placed in the top 50 of the world’s universities.
