With a strong research track record, vibrant campus and working environments, supported by the freedom to innovate and inspire, there is no better time to join Western Australia’s top university.

About the team
As part of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Operations portfolio, you will join the Safety team. The safety, health, and wellbeing of our staff, students and partners is fundamental to UWA’s pursuit of excellence in education and research. The Safety Directorate is responsible for all aspects of health and safety for staff, students and other users of the University’s campuses and properties in the context of the Western Australia Work Health and Safety Act 2020. This unit leads the University’s strategic intent to achieve and effectively maintain a safe and healthy working environment for all, and culture that considers safety and health risk as part of all operational planning and delivery activities.

About the opportunity
Reporting to the Director for Safety, you will have a significant role in managing the University’s Safety Management System (SMS). You will lead a team of WHS Advisers in the development, implementation, maintenance and auditing of UWA’s SMS to foster best practice and ongoing continuous improvement. You will work directly with University Heads of School, Heads of Research Groups and Business Unit Directors and their management lines to advise, guide, coach and audit local area operational safety risks. You will also provide leadership and direction on complex safety matters and work with your direct reports and with the extended UWA Safety and Health Team to lead in the provision of appropriate advice and support. In addition, you will lead the completion of positive performance safety activities (inspections, risk assessments, key risk audits, internal audits) across UWA to drive a proactive and integrated safety culture as aligned to UWA’s S&H Strategic Plan.

About you
You will demonstrate significant relevant experience in leading teams, along with possessing relevant tertiary qualifications, preferably postgraduate, in occupational safety and health, science, health, engineering, or similar, or showcase equivalent competency. Additionally, holding a WHS Lead Auditor Qualification and having substantial experience in implementing and maintaining safety management systems and audit programs are crucial.

Your extensive generalist safety experience will enable you to navigate complex safety issues across multiple work locations, collaborating within a team under a 'Partner' based model to provide best practice advice and support to key stakeholders. Furthermore, your excellent planning and organisational skills, coupled with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, are essential to ensure project completion.

Note: Provision of a Current National Police Clearance will be required by the successful applicant.
