About the opportunity
The Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join its dynamic team. This appointment is funded by a gift as the Garry and Susan Rothwell Chair in Architectural Design Leadership with a purpose to develop, through innovation in architecture and urbanism, the capacity of architectural design to improve people's quality of life.
This position will support and contribute to the broad architectural design research agenda of the Rothwell Co-Chairs, Atelier Bow Wow (2024–2026). Specifically, the position will explore ways in which architectural practice and research can support new forms of urban-rural connections, and how communities can thrive while nurturing their natural environments. The position will work under the direction of an academic member of staff at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
undertake research or scholarly activity contributing to the Atelier Bow Wow research agenda under the broad guidance of the Rothwell Co-Chairs and senior research staff in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning
take an active role in collaboratively developing and shaping the Co-Chairs’ research program
contribute to the production of a program of independent and collaborative published works and a program of public engagement shaped by the Co-Chairs’ research and teaching agenda
assist in the coordination and management of Rothwell Program activities, which may include developing, curating and publishing a major international symposium and exhibition; hosting international academic and professional visitors; conducting workshops, interviews, focus groups, research seminars; contributing to the supervision and support of research students; coursework teaching associated with the Rothwell program
travel to Atelier Bow Wow’s home studio annually to advance collaborative research, project funding provided
actively participate in broader research dissemination and engagement (e.g. seminars, conferences, publishing) to advance and promote the research program of the Rothwell Chair
maintain communications with the working group and other relevant stakeholders, inform of research progress and prepare academic papers, project briefs, progress reports, and media outputs.
About you
A PhD degree in architecture, urban design, urban planning or a cognate discipline, completed in the past 5 years
A track record of conducting independent research resulting in individual or collaborative publications of high quality in modes appropriate to the field of research (which may include traditional academic publications as well as works oriented to a broader public)
Teaching architectural design in a studio mode
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organisational and project management skills
Ability to build relationships within and beyond the University
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within and outside the University in a team to meet agreed deadlines and achieve project goals
Experience in preparing and editing reports and/or publications, and experience in collaborative authorship.
Demonstrated understanding of WHS responsibilities and actively ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others at work in accordance with your delegated authority, as described in the University’s WHS Policy and Procedures and role responsibilities

DESIRABLE:
Experience in curating and coordinating exhibitions, academic and/or public events
Experience with supervision of research students
Ability to communicate in Japanese.
