About the opportunity
The University of Sydney is now ranked 38th in the world for 2022 university rankings, moving up 5 places in the last year. Our graduate employability is 1st in Australia, and 4th in the world; our subject rankings in Medicine are rated 1st in Australia, and 18th in the world.
The Westmead Applied Research Centre (WARC) celebrates a research approach that thinks and acts flexibly, aims to do more with less, embraces technology in health care, sees co-design and partnership as necessities for translation and impact, and consistently views its activities through the lens of value and equity. Their aim is to create, evaluate and apply innovative clinical and digital health approaches to reduce the burden of cardiometabolic and other chronic conditions. Their core values are innovation, frugality, co-design, and value-based care.
This new five-year NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence to ‘Accelerate Stroke Trial Innovation and Translation’ is a national partnership of twenty academics and consumers, from twelve Universities and Medical Research Institutes across five states. The vision of the CRE is to transform interdisciplinary stroke clinical research in Australia with a series of new generation, innovatively designed, clinical trials that will deliver robust evidence in a more efficient and speedier manner for greater impact.
The CRE trials will be co-designed with those with lived experience of stroke, clinicians, and decision-makers. The Centre will integrate technology when delivering interventions and trials to remove barriers for people living outside metropolitan areas. We will leverage ‘big data’ to improve efficiencies and reduce waste in stroke research in Australia. The new health system platform created by our Centre will ensure swift translation of results from our trials solving real-world problems relevant to people living with stroke.
The Centre workforce development program will increase Australian capacity in stroke research, by supporting and growing the next generation of clinical researchers. The ‘whole of system’ approach will increase the numbers of Australians participating in stroke trials, reduce the time to effective translation, leading to reductions in premature death and the health burdens arising from stroke.
As the Research Support Officer: Centre of Research Excellence, your key responsibilities will be to:
- provide overall support for program management for multiple research projects including establishing project organisation structures, and embedding project governance and controls, project plans, tracking systems, and reporting guidelines

- manage and facilitate effective communication and good working relationships amongst key stakeholder groups collaborating on the CRE
- organise the annual collaborator meeting of the CRE, and other face-to-face meetings such as the consumer meetings, including arranging accommodation and travel for CRE delegates.
Please note that some travel will be required for this position.
About you
- excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day-to-day operational matters
