About Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS)
  • Metro North Hospital and Health Service (Metro North Health) operates the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) – part of the Herston Health Precinct, one of Australia’s largest integrated health and knowledge precincts. 

  • STARS is a new greenfield and digital, specialist public health facility which officially opened in 2021. It has been designed to deliver a range of new and expanded healthcare services to meet demand and increase patient access to specialist rehabilitation services, elective surgical and endoscopy procedural services. 

  • STARS is a new 182-bed specialist public health facility that couples complex rehabilitation and specialist elective surgical services and procedures in a planned procedure environment to provide patients with greater access to care in clinically recommended timeframes. 

  • STARS comprises 100 rehabilitation beds to provide care to patients with complex and specialist rehabilitation needs. and includes special purpose therapy areas. 

  • As Australia’s first purpose-built digital public hospital, STARS has opened with an integrated electronic medical record system and the digital healthcare at STARS includes technology to integrate devices to streamline workflows and patient care and at the point of care.

About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to work on a NHMRC-funded research program within the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) Education and Research alliance team, focused on cognitive rehabilitation incorporating virtual reality technology with people with brain injury. This research program is focused on co-designing (with consumers and experienced clinicians), developing, and testing a novel and innovative virtual reality-based tool and protocol for rehabilitation which addresses cognitive impairment after brain injury. For more information on the research project, please click here . Key responsibilities will include: 


 


Research 


Leading and coordinating research activities including: 


  • Managing research documents 

  • Regulatory approvals 

  • Research agreements 

  • Development of study protocols, study databases and report forms 

  • Supporting consumers to be involved in research 

  • Working with clinicians and consumers at STARS and technology developers to plan and conduct co-design and facilitate trial conduct 

  • Research data collection and analysis including quantitative and qualitative methods 


 


Supervision and researcher development 


  • Developing a track record of effective supervision of Honours and/or Higher Degree by Research students 


 


Citizenship and service 


  • Showing leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration, and active participation in priority activities 

  • Effectively and efficiently managing internal service roles and administration processes as required 

  • Collaborating in service activities external to STARS

This is a part-time (50%), fixed-term position for up to 3 years. At Academic level B, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $108,201 - $128,201, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $126,595 - $149,996 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

About You
  • Completion of a PhD in a relevant field including cognitive rehabilitation, brain injury or occupational therapy.

  • A growing profile in brain injury rehabilitation clinical research. 

  • Relevant experience and skills in some of the following areas: applied clinical research including project co-ordination, conducting research with people with moderate-severe brain injury, codesign with consumers and clinicians, supporting consumers to be involved in research, conduct of clinical trials, mixed methods research including quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, drafting manuscripts, and translation of research into practice. 

  • Demonstrated ability to gain knowledge of Australian regulatory requirements for clinical trials and clinical research and consumer involvement in research. 

  • A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences. 

  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining, and managing research funding. 

  • A developing record of supervision of Honours and/or Research Higher Degree students to successful completion. 

  • Clinical experience in delivering cognitive rehabilitation, for example from discipline of occupational therapy, will be highly regarded. 

  • Experience with technology and/or virtual reality will be highly regarded. 

  • Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities and engagement with industry partners in rehabilitation services.
