The Opportunity

The Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering has an opportunity for a Research Associate/Senior Research Associate. This role is working on a collaborative research project between GBIOM, the Garvan Medical Research Institute and other commercial partners, that is focussed on developing novel CRISPR biosensing technologies that will be disruptive to the diagnostic testing markets.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your scholarly research and professional activities both nationally and internationally through your contributions to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals, your participation in conferences and workshops, and your active engagement with industry partners.

This role reports to Professor Ewa Goldys, and has no direct reports

  • Salary, $106,337 to $119,440 per annum + 17% superannuation

  • Fixed-term contract – ASAP start until December 2026

Skills and Experience

Level A

  • A PhD in a related discipline such as Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or a related scientific field with relevant experience.
  • Industry experience in the area of product development will be highly regarded.
  • Leverage expertise in commercial Point-of-Care devices to advance our technology from academic concepts to industrial applications.
  • Expertise in nucleic acid-based molecular assay design, optimization, and validation.
  • Experience in CRISPR technology will be highly regarded.
  • Innovative contributions to CRISPR sensor developments will be an advantage.
  • Previous experience in molecular biology, covering nucleic acid chemistry principles, nucleic acid extraction (DNA and RNA), gene target amplification using PCR/isothermal amplification methods (LAMP, RPA, etc) and expertise in CRISPR technology for In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) assay/product development and quantitative data analysis.
  • Experience in developing and validating commercial microfluidic/nanofluidic based rapid diagnostic assays and point-of-care testing with field-deployable sensing and monitoring platforms will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience in quantitative methods for analysing, optimizing, and characterizing molecular assay performance.
  • Familiarity with patent databases focused on diagnostics technology, search methodologies, and analytical tools.
  • Demonstrated track record in research relative to opportunity.
  • Track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
  • Seeking an individual with a strong work ethic, ready to invest time in the laboratory, showcasing commitment to achieving research milestones and pushing the boundaries of innovation in Point-of-Care device development.

Level B (in addition to above)

  • Ability to analyse existing patents, strategize for innovation and intellectual property development.
  • Demonstrated track record in research relative to opportunity with evidence of emerging research leadership.
  • A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
