Research Associate (Level ARAS) / Research Fellow (Level BRF)

• Based in the Centre for Cancer Biology at the City West campus
• Full-time, fixed term contract until 31 January 2028
• Commencement Salary: $96,929 (Level ARAS) $109,074 (Level BRF) per annum (plus 17% superannuation)

About the Role

Under the direction of the Head of the Laboratory, the Research Associate (Level ARAS) will contribute to grant-funded research for the project “The missing heritability of human disease: discovery to implementation (The RD Collective)“  to achieve defined objectives and test stated hypotheses.

The Research Fellow (Level BRF) will implement and conduct high quality scientific research and report on research outcomes in line with research goals and milestones of the Molecular Pathology Research Laboratory, facilitating collaboration and translation of research findings.

The RD Collective project applies a coordinated multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary approach to transform the rare disease genetics space by providing improved diagnostic pipelines using new technologies and cutting-edge bioinformatic approaches, with the aim to identify the missing heritability of rare diseases and improving diagnostic rates.

Level of appointment to Level ARAS or Level BRF, will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant.

About the Centre for Cancer Biology

The Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB) is an alliance between the University of South Australia and CALHN and is co-located with other cancer-focussed researchers within a purpose-built building in Adelaide’s Biotech and Medical Precinct. The CCB studies the fundamental causes of cancer in order to find new ways to prevent and treat the disease and is a recognised hub for innovative science leading to breakthrough therapies.

Core Responsibilities 

Level ARAS

• Undertake research under limited supervision to achieve project grant outcomes
• Design and perform a range of experiments including appropriate controls to achieve planned research outcomes
• Prepare or contribute to the preparation of refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers arising from the research
• Undertake administrative duties associated with relevant research projects, as required from time to time

• Conduct high-quality research project independently or under limited supervision and in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders
• Design, perform and record experimental work
• Independently or under limited supervision, communicate research outcomes in both verbal and
• written form including presentations and reports to the research team
• Ensure delivery of project’s research milestones, objectives and work programs are met on time, within budget and to the industry partner’s satisfaction
• Develop a record of independent research that results in high-quality publications

Level ARAS

• Bachelor and postgraduate qualification in genetics and/or bioinformatics and/or statistics and/or cell and molecular biology and/or developmental biology and/or biochemistry and/or immunology related disciplines
• Experience with undertaking next generation sequencing (NGS) analyses, variant interpretation, variant classifications, and variant reporting
• High level understanding in interpreting biological relevance of clinical and genomic data
• Experience, as judged by grants and publications, in relevant areas of research and a substantial knowledge of laboratory procedures relevant to the research project/s

• A PhD in genetics and/or bioinformatics and/or statistics and/or cell and molecular biology and/or developmental biology and/or biochemistry and/or immunology related disciplines
• Demonstrated experience in recording, analysing, presenting and disseminating research to stakeholders including competency in the preparation of papers for high quality publications or posters for conference presentations
• Experience with the interrogation of large bioinformatics databases including analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data
• Experience with undertaking whole exome/genome analyses, variant interpretation, variant classification, and variant reporting
