You will work in collaboration with researchers and students from RMIT University, The University of Adelaide, The University of Melbourne, The University of South Australia and the Defence Science and Technology Group.  You will be involved experimental research of hybrid diamond-optical fibre magnetic sensing architectures to address the pressing issue of magnetic field detection at ambient temperatures in aqueous environments. Nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond will be utilised as magnetic field sensors.  In addition, processing (e.g., etching, lithography) of chemical vapour deposition diamond materials will be investigated as part of this position.  The sensing architectures to be explored are solid state to enable operation in highly complex environments with wide-ranging information sources.   With an optical readout mechanism, the hybrid-diamond optic fibre will be used for time-sensitive measurements to facilitate real-time decision-making.

You will be required to prepare publications and project milestone reports in collaboration with project partners and participate in the day-to-day operations of the project. You may be required to travel to Adelaide at times during the project and undertake research activities in line with the University’s research strategy. Furthermore, you will be expected to work with an increasing degree of autonomy as skills and experience develop.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:

  • Research experience in at least one or several of the following areas: diamond, materials science, quantum sensing, characterisation, photonics, fibre optics and solid-state physics.

  • Evidence of research output including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the above fields of research.

  • Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to work with confidently and effectively colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.
