About the opportunity

The University of Sydney welcomes applications for a Professor of Psychology (Education Focused) in the School of Psychology, Faculty of Science. With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused (EF) academic positions. The positions in this opportunity are for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, educational practice and innovation, and research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly-recruited group of educators will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney.

The School of Psychology offers high quality undergraduate and postgraduate training in Psychology. Embracing the scientist-practitioner model, the School strives to excel in education by using research-led and evidence-based teaching delivered by academics who are at the nexus of teaching and research. Its flagship program at the undergraduate level is the accredited Bachelor of Psychology (Honours). At the postgraduate level, the school offers the coveted accredited Masters in Clinical Psychology, equipping graduates with essential skills, knowledge, and values for successful leadership in psychological practice.

The Professor of Psychology (Education Focused) will lead efforts to enhance student learning through innovative educational practices. This role involves designing, implementing, and evaluating educational initiatives, coordinating high-quality teaching, and spearheading projects to explore pedagogical advancements, curriculum development, and program design within the School and Faculty to elevate the University's reputation as a leader in education in Psychology.

The ideal candidate will pioneer innovative teaching methods, develop and assess program-level-materials, and contribute to the global advancement of teaching methodologies. Responsibilities also include significant research in education, securing project funding, and representing the University at national and international forum.

The Professor of Psychology (Education Focused) dedicates the majority of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (up to 70%), with a minimum of 20% research and 10% governance, service, and engagement. Additionally, you will mentor junior academics, providing advice on teaching methodologies, education research approaches, publications, and career advancement.

About you (Skills, capabilities and experience)

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Hold a PhD in Psychology or closely related field
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of strategic issues within the higher education sector
  • Maintain a broad network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions
  • Have an international reputation as an authority in educational design and delivery, including recognition for achieving improved or consistently excellent student outcomes, educational innovation, educational leadership and/or well-regarded pedagogical or disciplinary research
  • Hold distinguished record of educational excellence, evidenced by contributions to student learning, recognition and innovative practices
  • Have a proven record for obtaining external funding for scholarly activities and research
  • Possess significant experience in leadership and management within the higher education, including excellence in supervision and/or mentoring
  • Demonstrated success in leading an academic endeavour from curriculum design to producing leading research and providing a student enabling environment

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a continuing position on a full-time basis, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
