About the opportunity

Join our team as a Professor in Development Biology and Human Genetics and play a pivotal role in shaping a culture of excellence within the School of Medical Sciences (SoMS).  You will lead academic staff and students towards success while contributing to the delivery of our Medical Sciences degree. This role involves enriching the curriculum by integrating development biology and human genetics, fostering collaborations between academia and industry, and spearheading research in emerging therapeutic approaches targeting prevalent diseases such as cardiovascular illness, cancer metastasis, and inflammatory disorders.

As an internationally recognised leader in development biology and human genetics, you will drive an independent and innovative research program focused on these fields' impact on human health, showcasing a strong track record of scholarly productivity and securing external funding. Your expertise will extend to delivering engaging lectures, leading discussions, and mentoring students at undergraduate and graduate levels in development biology and human genetics, utilising effective communication skills to convey complex scientific concepts.

Active collaboration with faculty members within and beyond the school is vital to foster interdisciplinary research initiatives, enriching our academic community through school activities, committee service, and scholarly exchanges. Additionally, your engagement in service activities and leadership roles within scientific societies will further enhance our outreach efforts, amplifying our impact in circadian biology and sleep science-related professional organizations.

Skills and qualifications

The candidate should have a strong track record of disseminating their research to the broader community through public outreach, including broadcast and social media.

  • A doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) in a relevant field.

  • A strong research background and a demonstrated record of scholarly productivity, including publications in reputable scientific journals.

  • Success in securing external funding through competitive grants and/or contracts.

  • Proficiency in designing and implementing advanced laboratory-based and field research techniques relevant to development biology and human genetics.

  • Expertise in analysing and interpreting complex datasets related to development biology and human genetics and health outcomes.

  • Teaching experience at the university level, including the ability to develop and deliver courses, mentor students, and assess learning outcomes.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate scientific concepts to diverse audiences.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across disciplines.

  • A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and service.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a Full time Continuing position. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
