Why Your Role Matters:
As the Chair of Intellectual Disability Mental Health, you will provide academic and clinical leadership, foster excellence in collaborative intellectual and developmental disability research, innovative teaching, clinical capacity building and engagement activities.
The role is responsible for developing and overseeing an internationally recognised program of translational and co-designed research in intellectual and developmental disability mental health. You will be primarily responsible for developing capacity and approaches to intellectual and developmental disability mental health in in South Eastern Sydney LHD, NSW, and nationally, including the leadership of innovative research related to the understanding of the determinants and impact of mental health concerns in people with intellectual and developmental disability, and research related to health services and outcomes. The role has deep interactions with NSW Health, the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, and other sector stakeholders. Relevant fields of research for the appointee are broad and include clinical or translational research relevant to cognitive disabilities.
You will work closely with the Centre staff, partners and research staff within the Faculty and across stakeholders to translate improved mental health outcomes for Australians living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The role of Professor/Associate Professor reports to the Director of the National Centre in Intellectual Disability Health, UNSW Medicine and Health, and to the Clinical Director, Mental Health program, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. The role also has a dotted line reporting to the Head of Discipline of Psychiatry and Mental Health within the School of Clinical Medicine at UNSW Sydney. The role has multiple direct reports. In addition, the position has a collaborative and teaching role with the Discipline of Psychiatry and Mental Health within the School of Clinical Medicine, UNSW Medicine and Health.
Who You Are:
- MBBS (or equivalent medical degree) and sub-specialty qualification in psychiatry, with demonstrated extensive academic and clinical experience in intellectual or developmental disability mental health.
- Specialist Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) registration or eligibility for specialist registration.
- Relevant work experience at the appropriate level, including demonstrated skill in leading a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated experience in leading or overseeing research and capacity building projects about the mental health care needs of people with intellectual disability.
- Leadership of projects which design, build capacity in, deliver and/or evaluate mental health services for people with intellectual disability.
- Track record of mental health research.
- Proven ability to work in co-design with people with lived experience of intellectual and/or developmental disability.
- Proven ability to apply advanced analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills in a complex multi-stakeholder operating environment.
- Proven leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with external stakeholders, including Government and the community.
- Experience in supervision of postgraduate research projects and students.
- Capacity to mentor, provide advice and guidance to clinicians and academics in this or a related field.
- Demonstrated capacity to lead by example in supporting equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion policy and programs as they relate to staff and students.
- An understanding of, and commitment to, the aims of South Eastern Sydney and UNSW, their objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
