About the opportunity 

The Northern Clinical School is a teaching hospital of the Sydney Medical School headquartered at Royal North Shore Hospital. We support students in our Doctor of Medicine program and well as practitioners completing postgraduate specialist training.

Medical research is another important activity within our school. Over one hundred postgraduate students are involved in a broad spectrum of research ranging from basic laboratory research to clinical and epidemiological projects across the campus. The Kolling Institute of Medical Research  is the oldest research institute in the state of New South Wales. It forms the nucleus of our research activity, which is conducted at a variety of locations on the hospital campus and throughout the northern area of Sydney.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Northern Clinical School within Cardiovascular Research team. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will join a growing research team led by Prof Gemma Figtree. The Research Associate will help to coordinate and undertake experimental data collection, analysis and interpretation and prepare publications.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

This Postdoctoral Research-focused academic at Level A is expected to have rodent animal modelling /handling experience to be able to apply and develop their expertise in conducting pre-clinical research. They will have the opportunity to work on research initiatives supporting the discovery and development of novel biomarkers of cardiovascular disease.

  • work closely with the team leader, team members and external collaborators.

  • to work independently and as part of the preclinical research team, to undertake quantitative research, including data collection, analysis and results dissemination.

  • assist in the development and publication of scientific papers.

  • assist in all activities related to conduct of the research including in the reviewing and updating of research, ethics, and standard operating procedures and research reporting.

  • contribute to the design and lead the execution of experiments in model organisms within grant deadline timeframes.

  • assist in the co-supervision of students.

  • maintains quality, standards and excellence in any research activities and output

About you

  • must hold a PhD in Biomedical Sciences OR in a relevant discipline

  • demonstrated experience working in laboratory research with animal handling Is a MUST

  • demonstrated knowledge and experience with cardiovascular and diabetes models, e.g. small animal echocardiography, hemodynamic measures, survival surgeries (highly desirable skills include - demonstrated expertise in animal behaviour protocols, molecular and histological analyses, cryostat operation, knowledge of anaesthetics, drug delivery procedures including oral gavage and minipump implantation)

  • demonstrated experience in preparing and executing animal ethics submissions

  • experience developing and contributing to strategic direction of research projects and evidence by producing original, high quality and independent research

  • demonstrates a research interest in cardiothoracic and vascular health

  • developing research profile evidenced by original, high-quality and independent published research

  • Broad skill set and proficiency using molecular assays, biochemical experiments in cells, cell culture techniques, preferably relative to the cardiovascular system

  • demonstrates an ability to communicate well with team members and supervisors

  • excellent written and oral communication skills with proficiency in statistical analyses software packages such as GraphPad Prism

  • experience in a research-intensive environment and working in academia, with previous experience in the supervision of research students desirable

  • ability to communicate effectively across a range of forums/stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams

  • experience in the development of academic manuscripts or report writing

  • accuracy, attention to detail and highly organized, with the ability to work according to strict deadlines and manage various demands
