  • Full time, fixed term for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. Offering a base salary of $101K- $112K + 17% superannuation

 

About the opportunity

 

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Project Leadership and the Organisational Dynamcis of Projects to work as part of the team in the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership , in the Faculty of Engineering, working on research projects, and helping to liaise and support two research themes working with senior academics from the internal management group, whose members are drawn from across the School of Project Management, as well as from other Schools and Faculties in the university, including the Business School. Due to the nature of the planned research, we are particularly looking for candidates with specialist capability to be able to work in two areas of inquiry and application:

  • project leadership. A business or engineering management scholar with an ability to work on topics of interest to, senior project managers and the ability to be able to engage with these people  to develop and progress empirical work related to the leadership of complex engineering projects. Leadership is the over-arching theme of the Institute and the successful candidate will be conducting research in an area of strategic importance for the Institute You may have experience in any of a range of complex project settings, such as aerospace, transport, construction, defense, or software

  • organizational dynamics of projects. Your interests may relate to project stakeholders, the project ecology, or other aspects of projects. Your capabilities will be in engineering management, management and organization studies or related areas We anticipate this topic will comprise about 50% of the focus of the role in which you will work with internal management group members to shape and conduct empirical work and to write high-impact publications from the findings

 

The project is an opportunity to engage with senior academics, engineers, and other experts on a regular basis to develop cutting-edge research that is both suitable for publication in leading academic journals as well as such that it will have an impact on the development of data-driven design in complex and uncertain engineered systems.

 

In this role, you will develop work as discussed with the Director of the Institute to develop a research trajectory that supports the aims of the Institute within the broader national context and is compatible with you career interests. As the Research Associate you are expected to work collaboratively on associated research projects with industry partners and contribute to one or more of the project management, leadership, innovation/technology/engineering management and organization studies research communities.

About you

  • a PhD in a relevant field such as project management, innovation, or organization studies, or a related discipline, with a strong track record (relative to opportunities) in research on projects, leadership, innovation or temporary organizations, including a body of work published in peer reviewed journals. Applicants who have submitted their PhD for examination or will do so in the immediate future can be considered

  • the ability to work with industry-based engineers both in written and verbal forms and be able to sustain relationships with these people and engage them in research opportunities

  • capabilities in working both independently and as part of a team of researchers, to identify opportunities, and to contribute and lead to the development of papers for publication

  • outstanding interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and the ability to conduct high quality research with increasing independence and to present that work in an engaging way

  • previous experience within a research environment and publication in relevant and refereed journals, and in a broad range of techniques, including approaches to qualitative data analysis

  • a high level of computer literacy with a good knowledge of relevant computer programs, and ability to work across and connect these as needed.

 

Desirable criteria – you may have (or be willing to learn)

 

  • the ability to write research proposals and to lead research papers

  • knowledge of research in project studies and how to develop papers for project management audiences

  • knowledge of the latest debates in the project leadership and organization studies communities

  • the ability to interview for research and work with senior project leaders.
